The Mighty Prawn
Hi all Couldn't decide if this went in here or food and drink, chose here sorry if I'm wrong Got my first pheasants this weekend on the syndicate, have had before but not shot by me. Hung for three days and went to prepare them today and one is higher than a hippy! Proper stinky and the breast has an unpleasant green hue. Other one is fine so my question is what happened? They were hanging in the garage and I know Sunday was a bit warm so that might not have helped but as the other is fine I'm wondering if it was a gut shot issue or similar? Any ideas? Off to walk the dogs and leave the kitchen to vent, it really is that bad...
malantone
Why hang them, they are for the most part young birds just clean them and cook them.
JDog
If they were left in a pile on the shoot for even an hour in last weekend's high temperatures they may have gone off. I have had grouse go off in an hour in a game bag. As Lady JDog never reads the forum I can tell you that this morning I removed ten days old pigeons from the salad compartment of the fridge along with 500 maggots. The Mighty Prawn
My bad, I think you're both right, don't hang as young and the warm weather also made it worse... JDog that is truly horrific, Mrs Prawn would head for the hills! She never knew about the time I left half a pint of mixed maggots in my fishing box and opened the garage to half a billion bluebottles! Just left the door open and they went their own ways
kyska
Get rid, I got a bag delivered from our shooters on the farm yesterday and it made me nearly heave, it'll taste like it smells....... Important lesson lads.
The Mighty Prawn
Let's hope it's cooler in a fortnight, was nice to shoot in shirt sleeves but I fear my pheasants paid the price Kyska, I'm sure they meant well but as the old saying goes, with friends like those etc "thanks for the shooting, here's a bag of rotting birds" :-)
moorvale55
I never hang mine, just butcher and freeze or use them. One of yours may have gone off if the guts were shot out.
pontbeck
Had two brace from last Saturday prepared three on Sunday but the fourth was heavily shot with an unpleasant smell and it went in the bin. I eat more pheasant than chicken but I only hang them for a day and the flavours fine.
Cranfield
As has been said, you don't need to hang early season game. I wouldn't hang any game outside of a chiller, before there are frosts on the ground. The Game Dealer says that one of the reasons that Shoots are paid such a low price for their birds is that the rejection levels are so high. Its a rare Shoot that hangs and stores their birds correctly after every drive.
