NickB65
Whether you agree with using treats to aide training or not I personally believe they can help with the training of the dog ALONG with positive voice commands. I do not use them on their own as the voice is often more than enough to show pleasure and displeasure for the dog. However, what do you use as a treat for the dog? I purchased some dried liver which is hard and breaks easily into small pieces but it is not cheap and does not seem to wow Blue. Anyone got any home recipes they use? kent
Well, dried liver is vey easy to make yourself and I suspect you dog will find it has far greater appeal than bought stuff. Dip the liver strips in boiling water and just par boil lightly then leave them on a woodburner or in the oven on low a good while ( to dry not cook till they are like iron). Alternatively use hard cheese. Whatever it is in must be a "high value" thing to the dog. There is nothing wrong about establishing good recall and the like with treats as long as they are phased out
darren 67
Tinned hotdogs cut up and dried in oven. Nice and cheep and dry them when cooking othe food and oven is cooling after cooking as its an electric oven.

Kevinjohnson34
Hot dog sausages have a lot salt, we use a treat made from 100% baked fish skins and the dog loves them
NickB65
hot dog sausage , cheese , bake liver with garlic salt, That sounds like a decent meal..... :-) Thanks guys - I will try some of the baked liver and cheese and when I have some spare Pigeon breast some dried pigeon breast...... Has to be said he is not that fussed with food.... but will see if a moist titbit may sway him :-)
loriusgarrulus
If he is not fussed with the dried liver try just chopping fine strips and put into boiling water for 10 minutes. Allow to cool and chop with scissors into treat size pieces. Sometimes if they do not go for the dried liver this will entice them more. Divide into amounts big enough for a training session and freeze in bags. Then defrost as needed.
