Crazy dog!

Last Monday, during half term I was out on the river we shoot over, threw some deeks out and just sat around waiting. A single bird showed, called him in, bang bird down in the river. Waited to send the dog, sent him in as normal by pointing out the line I want him to take where he could have just walked into the river until he started to swim, nice simple retrieve.

Instead he had other ideas, he ran to the left up the bank of the river, and jumped into the river off a banking 4-5ft high into a foot of water, now he's 35kilos, he bottomed out and really hurt himself. He still went to get the duck and brought it back but I could tell he wasn't right. Give him a good once over, no yelps or pull aways so I counted myself lucky and packed up with the dog in one piece.

When I got back to the van, I normally dry him off tell him to get in and up he jumps, he couldn't jump up I had to pick him up and put him in, same when we got home I had to pick him up and put him down out of the van. It was quite late so I phoned the vet and get the first appointment I could the morning after. I explained what had happened and to be fair she give him a good going over, checked his tail, his back, hips, elbows, neck etc. Big relief when she said she didn't think anything was broken.

She prescribed him some metacalm, it's just an antinflatory/ pain killing type drug. Two days later he was right as rain, figuring it was just the drugs allowing him to move more freely, I kept him in, hardly any exercise until the follow up appointment. Again, vet said she couldn't find anything wrong. Great news!

Now this dog is a lunatic, walking out on the marsh he's jumping gutters, running flat out through the mud really enjoying himself. Everything is 100mph with him, which I like. I have a shoot day this Sat which will be almost two weeks from the incident, he hasn't shown any sign of lameness or anything since the drugs have finished, I know you aren't vets, but do you think Sat is too soon to try him out, or should I leave him another week. He's been out for tidy walks with no ill effects.

I think he's ok looking at the way he's running up and down banking’s, my dad thinks he should have another week off.

On a keepers day last year 1 lab lunched itself over a fence, the fence was on top off a 15-20ft retaining wall onto fairly big stones/grassy bank of a river, picked the bird and had to go about 50yds upstream to get to where the retaining wall started.

How that dog never hurt itself severly i'll never know.

I'd agree with rimfire above depends how hard it wil be worked, sat at a peg or even beating on a large shoot with loads of birds so at heel most of time prob be ok, but if a more walked up mooch about where it will have to ratchand work hard mibee too much, but also depend if u can put and leave it in a motor easily throu the day if it does become too much at any point.

I'm sure it will be fine thou

Bearing in mind the water's a cold shock when the dog jumped in he might have suffered limp, or swimmers, tail. Labs seem prone to this and the symptoms you describe are what my lab gets going into cold water.

Some vets seem to be unfamiliar with it.

My lab normally recovers in a few days.
