The New Bridge shoot, Chirk, Wrexham.

My understanding is that some are pontificating, procrastinating, prevaricating even about taking a day at the New Bridge shoot. Don't, just get there and have a great day amongst decent company, see hard working beaters, dogs and pickers up and in excellent scenery and enjoy the company of good men who want to show what hard work and enthusiasm on a small pheasant shoot can do.

I took Dave (Passionforangling){P4A} to North Wales on Saturday to introduce him to pheasant shooting and the day we had did not disappoint. Lots of enthusiastic shoot members too numerous to mention, real bramble busting dogs, bacon baps, the odd glass of port and very good company was the order of the day along with some very good birds. The weather forecast was poor but in this micro climate we only had rain for an hour in the morning the good shooting weather until we packed up at 3:30.

P4A was nervous about attending his first shoot and in a deliberate attempt to increase his nerves I gave him some serious pointers about how the day would unfold, angles for safe shooting and not poaching other gun's birds. He behaved very well all day.

Beaters and dogs worked tirelessly to put pheasants over the guns and we saw a good show of birds, some of which were shot, some of which were missed. A woodcock or two shown on the last drive livened up proceedings though they were missed. Some fabulous Labrador work right at the end of the day when the dog was sent over the river Dee was a sight to behold.

One picture shows the team and the other shows P4A with his first ever pheasant.

Thank you for the kind words, you were indeed fortunate with the weather. We were so pleased to see Dave drop a good bird on the first drive to relieve the pressure on the poor man. So glad you enjoyed the day, with you being our first ever paying guests were we very nervous about the day. Looking forward to enjoying you company later in the season.

It was indeed a great day, in fact a great weekend. JDog did some research and found a lovely B and B just a couple of miles from the shoot that was a real home from home. It was an old whitewashed cottage with great hosts who made us the most stunning of breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday and even transported us to and from the pub on Saturday night. Very, very reasonably priced it was certainly a good choice to base ourselves.

The shoot day was superb; you couldn't wish to meet a nicer bunch of people who all made us feel very welcome. As a newcomer to driven pheasant I was nervous but after a certain amount of ridicule about my wellies I felt it was all to be taken in good humour and thoroughly enjoyed the day. If you are looking for breathtaking scenery, hard working people who really want you to enjoy your day then this is a place for you.

Certainly I would jump at the chance of a return day, if JDog is kind enough to return my cartridge bag!

Thanks again to all those involved in the shoot; you have a hidden gem.
