Morning all,

My 16 week on Sproker spaniel is though her first bag of food - Chudleys puppy food (pink bag) Wheat based

But talking to a friend they said they were advised to change to a rice based food instead of wheat based and the dog improved 10 fold with it.

So what do you guys recommend - Wheat or rice and any particular brand etc?

Thanks

Michael

She is doing well with lots of energy and stools are fine. She's is always ready for her next meal but I suppose that's a growing puppy.

It just having read and seen that a lot of puppy foods are rice based and wheat free etc and the one were using is wheat based. Now from looking it seams all wheat based foods are cheaper etc.

I just don't want to be giving second grade food for the sake of £10 or so per bag. We got the Chudleys one as it is what she started with but only because the breeder could not get skinners at the time.

Thanks

Michael

Hi Michael

A fair few dogs have allergies to cereals (wheat, barley) so sometimes it is best to go for something that doesn't have any cereal based dog food. I think mine are on chicken and rice diet (18% protein maintenance) that they have been for 3 years with no problems. If your dog has no signs of any allergic reactions to the dog food, I would stick to something that you are getting good results from. However when my youngest was 16 weeks it was on a higher protein diet of 22-23% until it was about 5 months and I dropped it to 18% protein. I use Trophy dog food but I only have 2 dogs and it's £40 a bag lasts 1 month but it's quality stuff. If I had 10 dogs I would probably use something a bit cheaper.

I shouldn't feed a pup on complete. Personally I far prefer to know exactly what its getting and were its coming from, they don't exactly eat you out of house and home an your feeding them in more smaller meals. If it was and had to be complete a rice base as I believe its more digestible than wheat.

Puppy food as I make it is fresh chicken or white fish, rice and veg mixed and cooked together with a bit of egg now and again (take it easy on this one) fed separate. Bits of cheese, apple and other healthy stuff (certainly no bits of string and general sweepings up which I have found in complete foods).

The thing is with a puppy you can make a big difference to the future health of the dog by careful, thoughtful feeding of high quality foods

This subject always divides people, personally I believe with a growing pup it will need quality protein while it is in a rapid growth phase to build good foundations. By quality protien I mean a high meat content.

I wouldn't get caught up in protein percentages and being hyper, mine is on a 38 percent food and he's fine

As has been mentioned buy Postie the condition of the stool will give you an indication as to how the puppy is handling the food inside. Then look at the coat and if he/she is perky and enjoying the time out. I have just moved my BMH out beside the CBR in the kennels, he is really doing well on the Beta puppy which the breeder recommended but he has started to get bored with it and tends to leave a lot in the bowl. I am now adding just a bit of the big dogs food (cant remember what it is but it is a working dog mix) mixed in with his regular stuff and will increase slightly over the months which seems to have boosted his apatite once more. Bowls are once again empty and he is now down to 2 feeds per day. I think you need to be ready to do some trial and error and give them a bit of a mix now and again. He is a happy wee soul and is already tracking fresh laid scents with deer feet well over 100 meters. I don't think it has anything to do with me, it is just that he is a natural.
