bigbird
I cant imagine that the GPS chip will be any good as it would have been done already. Problem is battery life (notice how quickly your phone battery drains when GPS is on?) and signal without an aerial. Maybe you'd have to plug the dog in to the mains to charge it
PhilR
With some dogs I have seen beating it might be very helpful to know that your dog has done the next drive already so everyone can finish early.

The battery is what has been holding it back, but apparently they have developed some clever thing that charges the battery as the dog moves about, similar to a auto watch but a lot smaller.
