I have been given a young acer tree , I am limited as to where I plant it in the garden , is there any rules on planting a tree near to a garage and a garden retaining wall?

I wouldnt plant a tree near any structure. What type of ground are you on?

Acer doesn't like an exposed spot so must be sheltered from the wind or it will burn. They like early sun but not full afternoon sun. And they also prefer a slightly ericaceous compost. Lovely trees though and well worth the effort.

Don't plant it so you can't drive your car in.

so I can sink a large pot into the ground next to a wall and all will be good?

I would keep it in a big pot and wrap it up or put it into a greenhouse over winter to stop the wind upsetting it too much

One thing to bear in mind is it will lose all of its leaves in the winter which is normal or in a very exposed location . You may think it has died; it hasn't, the leaves will come back in the spring.

We have a lovely acer tree; it is about 5' tall and has a good spread, its in a big pot I would like to put it in the ground where it will develop even more but it belongs to the son who says he will take it with him when he gets a place of his own
