finally pigeon on the rape

Did a bit of recon with my shooting partner today, about 70 to 80 pigeons on the rape, using 2 midfield oaks to roost in then just dropping onto the rape. Drove round and walked them off, stayed for half an hour hoping to catch a few return, plenty flying over but none dropped in... but looks promising, hope to get back there later in the week and set up a hide.

Been yesterday and they started to hammer the rape, a few flocks of 200-300 birds feeding on different fields. I couldn't set up in a hot spot as the rape is quite tall and i haven't got a dog to retrive the kills, but i found a good place in a corner of a field, set up at 11.30 and shot till 14.30 and bagged 23 birds. Not a massive bag by any standards but good to be out.

Just north of Bristol. My permission said there were many pigeons in a small woods behind his house and bombing the rape. Went last Thursday. There were a couple of hundred. Set up and again it was the day of the one shot wonder. I fired one shot and wondered where the little ********s went. Yes, they disappeared completely. Unable to hold them. Too much food elsewhere I suspect. That's pigeon shooting for you.

Don't worry about the size of the bag , you could have set up in the hot corner but lost the birds. I bet you enjoyed the 23 you had????

.I sure did. I could probably double the size of the bag, but as you said, the birds will be lost. I'll try again in the same spot on saturday, fingers crossed! :)

Went back to the rape field Saturday, small flocks using the trees to perch and then drop onto rape. Set up under an oak, shot 5, was too exposed, so moved to copse and set up again. Ended up with 20, to be honest could of had treble that, thought my aim was out, then noticed my adjustable comb had shifted, reset it best I could and started hitting them full on. A few really nice 40 -45 yarders to finish on a high. Had a good day at last even if I misssed a load of them.

Celebrated with a sliced pigeon breast sarnie, was delicious!!

Forgot to say, probably 200 or more over the trees and decoying to the fuds.

Have two fields of rape on different permissions each with about 300 birds hitting them this afternoon at 2 pm. But no traffic...all birds moving as one flock. I will go early tomorrow to see if arriving as one big flock or in smaller flocks....if so maybe worth setting up early when I next get chance? High winds may help to split them up??
