fieldwanderer
I've noticed over the years the bright white bits of a spaniel seem to be quite a turn off for the pigeons and really feel sorry for mine when she's shivering away in the hide, I tried putting her in the big ex-army rucksack that I use to carry most of my gear but she was having none of that! Would've kept her warm and hidden though So, I've tried a couple of dog coats but never had much success and thought I'd try one of the neoprene vests next, jack pyke make one and there's a few others about but they're all quite pricey. Has anyone tried one? Are they any good? Any other suggestions?
AberFowl
My lab wears a neoprene vest while out wildfowling but only when the weather turns really cold. She is supposed to be yellow but she is more white, stands out like a saw thumb but I wouldn't put it on her in mild or warm weather. I wouldn't put it on her while beating/rough shooting, would hate to see her get snagged on something and cause injury. They can be picked up for around £40 which in my eyes is a very very small price to pay to keep my best friend comfortable!
AberFowl
Another option which I have often done is cut a small piece of ex army camo net and drape it around the dog. Easily pulled off when dog needs to dash out for a retrieve and doesn't hold to much heat in during warmer weather.
fieldwanderer
Does it seem to keep your dog warm though? Camouflage is one thing but like you say, keeping my best friend warm matters too
AberFowl
Definitely keeps her warmer, I wouldn't bother with it if it didn't. She is more than happy to wear it when she's wet and cold, she refuses when its warm!
iamspuddy
i bought an avery neoprene dog vest the boaters style for my springer . this has slots in the back so you can lift the dog in to a boat ect . 5mm neoprene . i had a jack pike version but it got a bit tight, the beauty of the avery style is you can trim around the openings for a perfect fit . I bought it from ebay in the us as i wanted the boaters version. IT worked out at about £50 delivered.
fieldwanderer
Thankyou both, that'll do for her Christmas present then!
fieldwanderer
Any opinions on 3mm vs 5mm neoprene anyone? Reason I ask is; having had a look around, I think I prefer the dokken vest over the jack pyke one because it looks a bit longer but it's the thinner of the two
AberFowl
I have a few, 3mm and 5mm. They all help keep her core that bit warmer when she's sat in - conditions after a swim
fieldwanderer
Thanks, gone for the Dokken hopefully it'll help
Fal
I've recently bough one, had a nightmare trying to get one to fit!!! I went for the Dokken, and my mother has had to cut, re-stitch it to fit him! He hasn't had to wear it yet as it's been quite mild, but hopefully it'll get a lot colder, he will be wearing it from now.
