Sorry if this has been covered before but I am looking for a starter air rifle/scope setup for pest control around my mates farm.

Any recomendation on what sort of rifle/scope i should be searching for ( i think i will be looking for secondhand equipment). I am not looking for frills just accurate and reliable.

What sort of budget am I looking at for a setup that will perform this function, realistically I dont wont to spend more than £100-£200 (due to having 3 young kids the closer to £100 the better)

Thanks,

Nick

For that money Nick you are really looking at a springer with scope. Second hand I would see if you can find something like an older HW95 or BSA lightning if possible.

Closer to 100 you could look at some of the better chinese stuff but it would be worth joining UK Chinese owners club on the internet to see if you can get one someone has tuned to make it a bit smoother.

Hope this helps

Neil

For the budget you are on Nick I would sign up to the forum and have a look through the for sale section. Generally a nice bunch of people on there and you find a lot of people who smooth out a chinese springer as a project and then move onto their next one so let them for for reasonable money.

Also you could pick one up youself new and do some tuning yourself using advice in some of the stickies.

Google will throw up a lot of top end kit and yep I have owned some of it but quite a few mates have a lot of success with cheaper springers by keeping the ranges sensible.

Another vote here for the Hatsan 60S. It is a Webley Stingray mark 2 in a different stock. It has the great Quattro 2 stage trigger, open sights (so you don't need to buy a scope) and a nice bit of walnut for the stock. Gracing the action is a nice barrel (used to be LW barrel blanks) it has a good spring too. The two main problems are weight (it is a nice heavy gun) and length however the length aids stability and the long barrel keeps noise down.

Has an auto safety and anti bear trap too so you cannot fire the gun when it is broken and when you have reloaded it you have to take the safety off to fire it! I have one in my collection nestling alongside a very expensive BSA Super 10, a Daystate Mk 3, 2 Theobens etc and it does not feel out of place. I like the 60S. It is a hell of a lot of gun for the money.

The new Remington express looks nice and has had some good reviews?

Remington now own SMK and I believe the Express is the BMK B19 platform in yet another stock.

That would pee a lot of Yanks off if they knew their Crosmans and Remington pellet guns were actually Chinese made!

I would still go for the 60S!

I'd agree with the recommendations so far. The Hatsan is excellent, if a bit hold sensitive. SMK XS19 (and XS20 and XS208) are fine accurate guns for the money.

I have shot them all and personally would go for one of the new Remington carbine models.

Secretagentmole; the Remington is a completely new action and stock and not based on the XS19

Cheers

Good sound advice above, I bought a tuned B20 (same as an SMK XS20) chinese springer on the Chinese Airgun Forum nearly five years ago for £80 delivered and it is as smooth as silk to cock and shoot. I topped it with a £30 3-9x40 Leapers scope and put plenty of rabbits in the freezer with it. I wasn't much cop past 30 yards so just excepted that and made it my maximum hunting range.
