cartridge difference

not done much clay shooting but am taking my lads soon,

local ground (sporting targets) do their own brand cartridge 23g that are nice and cheap,

now i know to the more advanced clay shooters would notice the difference between these and the top end stuff but for me and the lads is it really worth spending the extra to get them or would the own brand cheapie's be good enough,

i know we not going to break any records but don't want to buy cheap if they not going to be up to much,

if any of that makes sense

I imagine they'll still be 7.5's (or similar) which is the standard clay shot size, or was when I last shot clays. I wouldn't worry about it too much Colin, main thing is you shoot some easy stands and that they enjoy it and break a few.

Obviously there is a connection between cartridge quality / load and performance, but not (IMO) at the beginner level.

Just have fun and don't think about it too much, a miss is a miss and it will be the shooter, I suggest, not the cartridge.

Enjoy :good:

Just as a PS, I'm in favour of beginners using a light recoil cartridge (especially if using a lightweight shotgun) purely because gun mount can be so all over the place (not to mention gun fit) that someone can be put off for life if they get too banged about in the early days.

Heavy recoil put my son completely off shooting (much to my dismay). Hull Comp-X 21g all the way for any beginner. Not only are they inexpensive, but negligible recoil.

I totally agree with that. I started clay shooting years ago using a light 1970s Franchi Falconet which kicked like a mule with something like an Eley Superb. I was advised to use Hull Comp X 21s and somehow clawed my way to AA class (club level only) within two years after upgrading my gun and changing to Gamebore Super Gems. Using lower recoil cartridges in early days was invaluable as a way of gaining experience of getting my gun mount right.
