How big is your hide?

For years now, I've been using a large piece of "tank net" to make a rectangular hide with 4 poles. It worked well because I usually shared it with dog and my mate. I'd guess it's about 2.5mtrs X 1.75 but it's too big for just me and the dog and it's heavy (not to mention a nightmare with brambles etc!).

So, to cut some of the weight and bulk down, I've bought some 1.5m X 7m realtree style stuff. I don't think I really need a hide that big though so the plan is to cut it down to just right for me and the dog with enough room to move around a bit. Just wondering if I'll end up with enough left to sew it to the back wall to Form a built in roof when needed (though I might get some waterproof camo fabric for that).

And the disclaimer; it won't be me doing the sewing!

I Think I've decided on 1.5m square but might go a little shallower. I used to just hide behind a small square of camo net but find a little sort of "room" works better and is more comfortable.

Any advice with these Fine mesh, see through hides? Other than that they need a dark background, I can't find much else.

Put a point on the front of the hide, then you don't have to bring the gun " back " away from the hide net.

I use a modern net as a first layer and old net for the outer....

To be honest people put to much in to this, nice and simple and sit still is the answer, enough room to mount the gun in one move.

You need contact with you gun much the same as walking, roost shooting or on a peg....

All this leaning it against the hide net/plastic tray/gun stand does not afford you the time on fast birds...

One the best hide material I have used, and use now, is CamoReal. It seems to blend in with every background, even dry stone walls!

Do you guys always put a sort of 1/2 roof on the hide, or just leave the top open, been building a hide for two of us to sit in and starting thinking really we need a bit of roof camo to cover the back of the hide, don't know if I'm been paranoid

I don't think I've ever used a roof on one of my hides. I don't think a roof is necessary.

We always make a double hide with eight poles usually my arms span wide approx six feet and four feet deep with a net between us . Use the hedge as a back if possible but if not use another net at the rear. If we have a natural hide or deviation in the hedge we use that so some times it can be larger.

I use two stealth nets, a 4m one is pulled round 8 poles taught, and I drape the 5m one hooking it on the two outer poles and maybe once on one of the centre poles. This gives thick cover up to shoulder height when seated through double layer and windows to look through on the single layer.

Both nets fold up quite small and are very light.

Like Motty has said, I don't really care for colour matching to the background.

Usually, I go for a flat wall in front, high enough to hide me when I'm sitting on me stool. Then a diagonal wall on either side stretching back to the hedge. No roof, unless I've really cut in and created a natural one :D

I use telescopic poles and have extra camo net, gathered at the base, so it's fully adjustable, height wise.

Probably not the way most people do it, but, it works for me. It all rolls up, nice and small and is easily stashed away.
