Should dogs be muzzled off lead ?

Dogs should be on licence or tag type things like fac,if you don't have valid reason for having or owning one you shouldn't have one, this would get rid of allsorts of problems arising from careless dog owners. I have dogs for wildfowling beating and picking up that's my reason to own them. Not because I want to cuddle them and treat them like children.

According to 955i, we only have working dogs as trophys to fit in with our idea of what we need to be 'a shooter' !!

Company is a good reason to own one if you are single.

No, only some of us :whistling: .

My dog is a Utonagan and not for hunting at all. She is trained to help me in my job and sniffs out badger, otter and now recently water vole.

Pays her way :good:

Just had a really nasty experience with my whippet cross...was just cleaning up after his morning ablutions and placing the doggy doos in the doggy doos bin when a Large female boxer who was being exercised in an adjacent field came bounding over completely ignoring the calls of her owner and pitched straight into my dog.

I had to spin the dog away on his lead and get between them whereapon the boxer took a bite at my arm and leg. Luckily my dog had a wide leather collar on but the teeth marks on it are quite prominent.

The owner of the boxer was very apologetic and suitably chastised the dog, but what was more frightening for me was the fact the if I wasn't as big as I was and it had been my wife ....my dog would have been ripped to shreds.

Despite being a fit and strong man he found it very difficult to bring his dog under control as it was a big powerful dog.

I was very surprised because boxers aren't normally aggressive but these two obviously took a dislike to each other.

I have always muzzled all my dogs when they have been off lead apart from when they have been working.

Do you think this should be a mandatory requirement. ? Particularly where dogs are potentially more powerful than their owners.?.

This really ****** me off. Absolutely totally no excuse for poorly behaved dogs, especially aggressive and dangerous poorly behaved dogs. In my opinion there is no excuse for an unruly dog, people think they don't have a responsibilty for training their dog and when it dsiplay unwanted or nuisance behaviour the owner says "oo, he/she has nver done that before I don't know what wrong with him/her" but without putting measures/boundaries/training in place the truth is every day you don't know what your going to get out of your dog.

Really sorry for your experience, putting muzzles on dogs when out in public wouldn't work because it doesn't stop the behaviour, I once had to catch up a patterdale that had a muzzle on it, it was balling lambs over up at the farm. If I'd have had a gun I'd have shot it. True the muzzle prevented it mauling a lamb but didn't prevent the stress and horror the lambs experienced some of which didn't recover.

Its all about reponsibility if you know your dog can have issues either muzzle it or keep it on a lead.

My rescue Shepard/ Lab cross pathologically hates other dogs I suspect before we got her something really laid into her and she now tries to get the first blow in, she is now predatory agressive towards other dogs. Due to this she is always walked on a lead with with a figure 8 head harness on.

The reason is I know that I cant trust her when she sees another dog the red mist descends and she would be off. This however doesnt stop other peoples dogs from coming over with the usual "oh he/ she is friendly" well sorry mate mine when it comes to other dogs isnt.

The upshot of this is most of the time I join the ranks of the late night dog walkers so I can avoid incidents because people whos dogs take no notice of them dont keep their dogs on a lead!

Its a pain but she is a fantastic family pet and my kids adour her, we knew if we sent her back to the dog home she would either be a permanent resident or for the chop. Odd dog really she has no issues with people or kids just hates her own species.

Glad your dog got off without any major damage Mike though it sounds like it was lucky.

I've got a similar situation, my dog just can't be trusted around other dogs, but her actions are completely a fear response, not actual aggression. I suspect the tools that had her before me either didn't socialise her at all as a puppy or have used her for fighting and encouraged such behaviour.

As far as i'm concerned all dogs should be on leads in public areas unless you have perfected recall with it, i think i've seen that once before. And they should be on fixed length leads not recall leads, (which are never used for recall training, just to let dogs go off on their own without having to go with them)

sometimes, the self righteousness of some of the members on here is on a totally different scale.

the comment's about people not owning dogs without good reason are ridiculous. it would completely unworkable.

who has the right to define what a valid reason is? as 955i stated, companionship is actually a legally recognised term in most places now. who would prove otherwise?

everyones entitled to their own opinion and all that, but really?
