Putting on weight

Since he was a pup my dog was never a greedy dog. He gets fed twice a day and when we put his food down (CSJ CP24) he would have a few mouth full's and walk away; He would always eat all his food but he would eat it over 2/3hrs.

Ever since he has had the snip he has become an eating machine. He's gone from one extreme to another. I've stopped the girls giving him treats, and if he has any left overs from our food it is deducted from his meals.

I have reduced his intake slightly and having stopped the treats as well it is beginning to pay dividends, but he's constantly hungry and begging for food.

Two questions:

How fattening are rawhide treats? We tend to give him one of these when we leave him alone as it keeps him busy for hours; I give him the smaller flat ones rather than the rolled up bone shaped ones, so they ain't that big for the size of dog he is, but I can't find any nutritional value to ***** the calorie intake.

The food he has is high in protein, should I cut down the quantity (he'll be climbing the walls) or change the food to a lower protein food. He's not working yet but he is pretty active, he's walked daily and goes on a 6km run about 3 times a week with me and or the wife.

I really don't care for rawhide chews - had to fish them twice out of the throat of a choking dog. I don't think there's any huge calorific value to them though as they're just skin and no fat.

I tend to use carrots and celery for my dogs as treats these days. Trouble is the viz adores carrots now and he mopped up a full bag from the kitchen table yesterday

Try feeding once a day dogs like a full belly, what type of dog is he and is he getting fat. Some dogs have a fast metabolism so he might genuinely be not getting enough food. The snip may have changed his metabolism.Plus if you give him treats and the family give him treats he could just be trying it on.I would stop all treats and just feed once a day that way the dog knows exactly where he stands.

I've been thinking about this thread - ask me any question on equine nutrition and id probably be ok (family manufacture horse feed) but dogs not so much.

I don't think dropping the protein would make a jot of difference. Lowering the carb and oil content, maybe and certainly the 'filler'. For a dog getting the amount of exercise that he is, being overweight astonishes me.

IMO rawhide treats or suchlike may be masking a problem.

How old is he now ? Sorry if I've missed this but is he lab/spaniel or other?
