Bristol Channel Shore Fishing

Has anyone had any success fishing from shore on the Bristol Chanel so far this winter?

I'm planning on heading there to try for some cod for the first time next week and was wondering if there is any chance of catching anything?

Any advice on locations would be welcome as it's a new venue for me following a house move. I was thinking of the Portishead area and any details on where to go would be useful?

Thanks, Ruaraidh

I've ever only fished lade bay Clevedon and under the new bridge at seven beach

I was chatting to a local guy near Thornbury and he has had a few around the 2.5 and 3lb mark not sure of bait

Aust services on the gravel bed is suppose to be good but with all marks down here you got to understand the tide heights etc as it is bloody dangerous waters and if you get caught out your fish food

Hello mate the channel is fishing the best it has for around 10 years for codling between 2-4lb with anglers averaging between 6 to 15 a trip if you fish places like seven beach with fresh lug you will be in with a good chance of a few :)

If you have never fished aust make sure you go up with someone who knows it because on certain tides it floods right over the fields and on neap tides the mud is a definate widow maker any more info you need let me know cheers ben

Well, eventually made it out last Saturday but unfortunately blanked. Ended up on the rock ledges to the north of Clevedon after the man in the Portishead tackle shop said the tide was a bit low to head to Severn Beach and I had the dog with me so didn't fancy a congested battery point. Lots of other anglers buying bait who were reporting successes on the cod.

Fished a cocktail of sqid and black lug on pennel rigs but didn't even get a bite. Mark looked good and bottom seemed clean as I didn't get any snags. Fished 1.5hrs on the incoming tide into darkness and then about 45min of the outgoing tide before it got too strong and even the grip leads weren't holding.

Now need to decide whether to try there again or try a different location next time out. Anyone else had success in the Bristol Channel recently?

I used to fish the channel a lot between avonmouth and severn beach

That stretch is reasonably safe rag worm on a pulley rig you don't need a massive cast as I think a lot of people over cast

If there are no cod about you can usually get into a few flatties

You will need a good weight to hold bottom and fish the highest tides for best chance

Have fun be careful and most of all wrap up it gets bloody cold down there
