Idiots on the marsh

So to try and keep this short. I was out today and had my first blank morning of the season,(can't complain with that) but there were some idiots on the marsh that were comfortably firing at birds around the 150 yard mark. The geese werent shot at when they flew over me 70/80 yards up and they were even higher by the time they reached said guns,(you'd think they'd put 2+2 together). I could possibly understand a shot out of boredom but to fire heaps of cartridges between several guns and not drop anything is just stupid.

That's twice over the xmas period this has happened. Fortunately we don't normally have this problem so it's likely visiting guns but it's still annoying!

Apologies for the rant. Hopefully everyone wlse had better luck this morning

This is often what happens when people travel long distances to partake in the 'sport' of wildfowling. Since the hunter-gatherer activity degenerated into a 'sport', tradional local people have had to put up with this sort of thing by traveling gunners, and BASC encourages clubs to issue permits to these people.

Sadly this is not new. Been going on as long as I can remember.

Worst comment you hear after 30+ futile shots is "Good shot" when some poor unfortunate bird gets tipped out of the sky to land several fields away.

They should be banned from the marshes by the clubs but it is a very difficult thing to deal with.

I couldn't be hooped if I was seeing this every week. problem is, said guns clearly arent bothered if they wing birds or not. Plus with 'right to roam' and free shooting below high tide, kicking someone out of a club,(if they're even a member) wouldn't do much good...shame really

On a plus side I got a single pink this evening at a rangey 40 yards

I think this is now happening everywhere, and it isn't only visiting guns! Combine this with people arriving late/leaving early and poor id and it really is a bad lot. I personally find that a lot of these so called wildfowlers will stick it for 1 or 2 seasons before loosing interest.

I do sometimes think there should be more safety and quarry ID tests prior to gaining a gun licence but on the opposite side that's just another nail in the coffin

happens to often were I shoot also, last time I was there October sadly there was 3 of them shoulder to shoulder in a 5ft hide when its meant to be no more than 31/2ft by 5ft width...dangerous or what I went over and said you need to turn your hide around if your pigeon shooting  and also 2 regulars who were shooting at wigeon 100yds so off I went and had a word with them....then I left in disgust...next time they go in for a wash!

If you look on the pictures , one Bod has posted about his duck shooting and even posted a picture of a dark drake Mandarin on this forum :whistling:

Most of the idiots come in on the moon with the geese. Not all, some made it earlier but you could tell as they usually stand out from the rest as they like to go places you can't get on a tide or they stand around or wander about aimlessly. Most of these are new idiots. The sooner the new breed of idiots is wiped out the better for wildfowling sake.

Unfortunately you are so right I had a queue behind me on the last moon banging away at still climbing pinks that I had let go And I would like to think I'm a pretty good judge of range and my shooting capabilities

"Sky Busting" as is the Yanks terminology for Shooting at out of Range Birds' has always been a problem in Wildfowling and especially where geese are concerned.

Im sure most of us will have pulled the trigger at a range'y Goose at one one or another' but I have witnessed shots fired at geese' that no shotgun ever made would bring Down.

As far as Im concerned' it shoudnt matter if Someone has travelled 500 miles or 5 miles' If a Goose is out of range' It is out of range.!! End off.

A True Fowler' will rarely if ever fire at fowl out of range and risk wounding them..He cares to much about his quarry and sport and its easy for him to show restraint.

Clubs can do only so much to try and stop one of the worst Crimes in Wildfowling' unfortunately there has always, and will always be the "John Waynes and Clint eastwoods" who dont listen and think they know better and to hell with anyone trying to tell them different.

Of cousre i am speaking of my experiences and Not of problems on the Wash..But it has always been well publised that wherever Geese are present this problem exists.

Chancers they may be..Wildfowlers they are Not.

This does happen everyware and i feel really sorry for the birds and obviously they have no respect to there quarry.

I was out one morning at the geese and i had pinks flying over me About 60 yards up which i let go skene afta skene. One guy was further up from me, when the geese got to him they were about 120 yards up and i counted 27 shots. I was watching him with the binoculars, I seen him injury one goose and what ****** me off after that he was finished he didnt even go and look for that goose. I went and looked for the goose and found it.

Theres nothing worse than no respect to the birds and injuring one and not bothering with going to look for the bird.

Slow to reply to this but interesting to hear the comments. Does sound like its a problem all over..

Well I thought about going around to see who's car it was to report it. Or leave a message on the windscreen but came to the conclusion that they wouldn't care and I'd be wasting my time..

I also don't think it helps when choke companies are advertising in BASC magazine that you can now shoot at ranges you've only imagined before

Think that's a very fair point.. Know someone that has recently bought a patternmaster. Now he probably shoots as many geese as anyone on here so clearly he's bought it 'out of interest'. Half the time, (if you get under them properly) I reckon most geese are shot around the 35/40 yard mark and you don't need it..

Very true. Certainly in Scotland you can't stop folk going down. And on top of that you go out to enjoy yourself and not run around trying to police everyone

This is also a problem i have seen with ducks and all flying birds that can be 9shot ive seen people trying to shoot crows at 80 yards then not going to finish them off when they have flown 600 yards and winged out i dont think its just on the geese

As regards to extended chokes i have a pattern master in my al391 urika 12 gauge and i find that you kill the geese extremely well at upto 40 yards but you need to get used to shooting with them because the pattern is so tight but if you use it right they do improve to the kill to injure ratio and you should not have so many winged out runners to track down and finish off :)

If you stick to shooting properly and keep letting the high birds go then you will be rewarded one day but as the better wildfowlers will know its just a patient sport not like banging away at endless flights of driven game birds

Very true that man, and more often than not I find it's the chase that makes the end result even more sweet. There is nothing more rewarding than having to work to get a bird in the bag, then all those blank flights learning the behaviours and flight patterns of the birds pay off.

Silver pigeon 3. You read my latest under Fowling Season 2014/15?

Would try the patience of a saint!

I have and I am sure it was a fantastic experience sharing the space with them, things like that is what makes wildfowling truly special. I am sure another time it will be different and they will commit to the decoys perfectly. But I am no expert in anything regarding Pinks as have only ever been under them once and fluffed the chance!!

What will happen next time is that I will send the dog out as soon as the first lot land.

Then my 'coys may be of some use.

It happened again yesterday morning and I did what I said above and it worked.

They all b******* off and the next lot came on the 'coys - and I missed! Got one with the second barrel though.

Merlyn enjoyed the chase.
