garage's charge for parts

You cant dissect mark up without looking at overhead.

Beat me to it.

 

We all seem to know the price of everything.... but the value of nothing in this country. Profit seems to be a dirty word. Shop elsewhere if you are not happy.

Just as an example,

My boss buys Ford parts via the local Ford dealers,

He gets on average 25% off of the manufacturers RRP, He then typically bills those parts out @ typically plus 30 - 40%

If i buy my Ford parts from same dealer, paying cash but delivered at work, I only get 10-15% discount.

 

When i had my T5,

A new dual mass Flywheel from local VW Dealership was £1000, I bought the same item for just over £400 from a local parts supplier.

Both items manufactured by a company called LUK, only difference...one box had VW all over it.

 

There are some shockingly poor pattern parts out there for sale on auction sites.

Neil, assume the VW dealership is a nice shiny place with free drinks etc :)

Hi gents, i've been browsing ebay for car parts and came across a few things that I had the local garage fix for me, the most recent being a sensor. now on ebay I've found 2 types, both were well under what the garage charged me. this led me to delve a bit deeper and check on a few more bits, the current trend is they're all at least 50% cheaper. do most garages charge double for parts? or am I having my pants taken down by this particular firm? I feel a rant brewing....

i have used millners jap 4x4 parts for over 10 years now dont let any garage buy any parts maybe just fit the odd one or two

Being in the bodyshop trade I know guys with motor factor shops, mechanics and it is a cut throat business out there some garages will charge you over the odds for a part which you could buy yourself for a fraction of the price from a motor factor yourself and supply the garage for them to fit for you and they charge you labour only.

I have had my pants down myself a few years back owning a Porsche Carrera I used to take it to a Porsche specialist in Leeds (Porschtec-for anyone who might be using him be aware) for all the repairs and on one occasion I turned up at the garage just to see how he was getting on as my car had been with him for 4 days and was due back the next day and I noticed him taking delivery of antifreeze, EGR Valve and various other parts from GSF for my car when he had told me he buys everything he uses only from Porsche themselves and had quoted me based on Porsche prices for the parts.

I paid what I owed him upon collection of my car but made it very clear I had caught him out and have never been back since.

got a milner oil filter on my truck now, oil pressure lamp is slower going out than it was, going back to genuine filter next oil change (use a ford filter, no way the overpriced mazda one)

yep, garages are a total rip off, after all, the work shop has to make enough money to cover reception staff, stores staff, sales rarely generate that much (unless its used car sales, the mark up on new would surprise most of you irrespective of ticket price, and none of you are prepared to pay that) most garages are large in area so rates are extortionate, energy costs (mechanics are sensitive types so need heated workshops and luxury tea breaks) are high, then if its a dealer take into account the fees the makers charge for the privilege of selling their products, training costs, environmental charges (no longer allowed to tip waste oil down the drain), yep, garages are a bunch of tossers (and all this does not take into account tooling costs as most of the tools are owned and paid for by the blokes who use them and, unlike a self employed bricky or chippy can`t even claim the vat back), ******* the lot of them

its nice to see that someone gets it...

 

paddygalore, imho your garage have stiffed you a bit. but, its common throughout the trade im afraid. shop around mate, its the only way in this day and age.

 

with regards to the post about the flywheel from a motorfactors being the same part without the badge on it, i promise you that just because the genuine part and the factor part say LUK on them it doesnt mean that they are the same.

factor parts are made from cheaper materials than the genuine parts, and often in a different factory.

the service life of factor parts is generally less than that of genuine, and they usually only carry a 1 year warranty.

our parts (Audi) all carry 2 year warranty that will cover you for parts AND the labour to change them (even if we didnt fit them).

if buying yourself from a factors, you'll only be covered for the part.

 

with regards to overheads, alot has already been mentioned but the other thing that needs to be taken in to account is training costs.

we spend around £18000 to £20000 a year on training our staff. sounds alot but in reality that only 3 courses per person per year.

 

it all adds up.

Well excuse us for making a living I saw a great quote on facebook the other day "expectations of a surgeon salary of a janitor"

Just about sums it up for me

Don't forget we have to add on charges to cover all the "ever since you repaired my car......" "that scratch wasn't there before "

"My sat navs been stolen"

Sorry if I've shattered any illusions but we have in fact heard them ALL before

Incidentally why is it always sat navs we steal going by the cutomers where I work I shouldn't be able to get through my front door for tom toms all over the place

Every filter i have had from millners has been bosh or blue print and have never had any problems with them and for around £14 inc delivery you cant go wrong, Is your filter the short stubby one or the big one i have used both on my hilux and the only time the oil light stays on a little longer is if i am short on oil like last change 1/2 litre short ( ran out of oil till i got some more) but both sized filters are fine

mines the older model with the bucket sized filter, got the boshi one on now, think that on the ford and mazda filters there may be a valve fitted that stops the filter draining overnight, seem to recall that Daihatsu`s had a problem with the filters draining as it was mounted on the top of the engine

Best one we have ever had is we replaced a wing on a pickup, lady collected the vehicle when the job was completed and went away happy. 2 weeks later the lady comes back in and states she has a problem with the repair, on asking what the issue is she says that we had moved the aerial position from the roof to the new wing! I assured her that we hadn't and if we had it would have left a hole in the roof, she wouldn't have it and left saying that she would be seeking legal advice! Needless to say we never heard anything more of it. Or another one where we again replaced a wing on a rav 4, the job left no problems - roll on a good year later and the customer comes in with the same wing damaged. He claimed that he visited his sister and on swinging into the drive hit the gate post, his reason for hitting it was that the wing we fitted was wider in the arch and he thought we should stand a proportion of the repair costs.

I assumed he was joking and smiled at the story, only for his mood to change and he told me it was no laughing matter! I even had to go to the lengths of showing him the purchase receipt for the genuine wing we had fitted and he said he would take the matter up with Toyota.

Customers don't you love them!!!!

you all think that your £30 code reader tells you what your problem is, your just in the same boat as the garage that gives the job to the apprentice who thinks that just because the code reader says one thing that is the fault, the skill is understanding what can cause a code to be flagged, just because your cheap gadget says one thing the fault may lie with another component affecting the signal something else tells the computer, this is where the difference is between diy systems and dealer systems comes in, they usually have testing facilities built in to prove things and even then if the tech does not understand the system you end up with multiple components being fitted in the hope that one of them actually fixes it, that's part of the reason dealer systems cost a hell of a lot more (think the ford system was about 8k to buy and updates are sometimes every day), absolutely sick of garages being tarred as rip off merchants, just think how much a briccy or plumber would cost if they had the same expenses, and one thing that has changed a lot is the amount the person gets paid compared to the labour charge, mechanics get **** wage compared to the skills level now needed to do the job, don`t know if I`ll go back to it when my shoulders fixed, sweeping a street may have a higher standing to the public eye nowadays
