is it worth using flags to try and channel them closer. ive found a spot which has 2 flightlines breaking from one around 200 to 300yds from that spot. both flighlines come down either side of the field, manage to decoy a few but not as many as i would of thought. unfortunately it breaks up over land i dont have permission. any ideas? :/

I've used white flags to effect but only to dissuade pigeons from landing and feeding in certain areas of a large field in which they are interested and diverting their attention to another area of the same field by the use of decoys.

In your case it seems from your description that they are not interested in landing and feeding in your field so using flags to divert them from a flightline into that field in which they are showing no interest seems of questionable value.

So, I suggest the best thing to do is to give it a go and post your experiences on PW.

its a big wheat field, and they usually do feed in a couple of different places. One place they always feed is by a telegraph line which their is no suitable place to set up, i think i will defo try flags where they are feeding. Thanks it makes sense now, whats the best way to make them and do i put them out on the day?

Last week I shot pigeons decoying well into a smallish field which had 56 flags in it. I wish I had taken a photo.

If they had been decoying well you would not have had time to count the flags :)

Anywhere can be a potential hide site.

Agreed , as long as you have earth under your feet then you can put a hide there , if you do not have earth then your in trouble

I may change my mind about moving to Lincolnshire. The sense of humour baffles me.

I think they do work for a day or two, but I have had the same experience as JDog when the flags have been out a while, the birds soon get use to them.

One of the best days decoying I have had was within 50 yards of a gas gun that went off every 30 minutes.

When it went off, any incoming birds would swerve a little bit, but keep on coming.

The trouble is the poles run along just out side the boundrie with a footpath running adjacent to it, there are two houses very close and a riding stable. Dont want to upset anyone especialy the farmer when he gets complaints. I think flags in places along there might be the only option.

Flags can be very effective to move birds from an area to a decoy pattern. We have eight foot fibreglass poles , on these we fit two plastic bags on unequal strings which spin in the wind or one of those white paper overalls which have golf balls in the tied legs and arms and fill with air in the wind and " Moon Walk" across the field. If it is a very light wind we remove the golf balls. They can be very effective in delicate and sensitive areas which you are unable to shoot. When we have seen birds on fields and asked permission and it is refused we ask if we can put a " Scarecrow " on the field for a day and this is usually accepted.

Tell me more. I wont tell anyone.

sounds like PC has the right idea! big and bright

have used small flags on many occasions, they seem to work best on laid cereal patches in the summer, think its because they are concentrated in smaller areas the white puts birds off landing there and they circle for a tempting patch without the flag, Yours hopefully!!

good way of putting them off unshootable patches near roads etc. not sure they will work in your situation. if you are worried about upsetting the farmer watch the telephone wires, a pellet wedge in between the strands will rot the cable and break it, sometime in the future, the connectors on the poles don't like lead either!

Best of luck
