Heating for puppies.

Hello PW

I am sectioning half of my garage off to form a better area for my labrador retriever to sleep in. Part of it will have a sleeping patform / box.

My question is , do PW think that I should provide a heater lamp for when she eventually has pups ? If so, what type.?

Cheers from Darwin !!

For the pups yes some heat would be a good idea .

Have a look at poultry or pig lamps like this, but obviously ensure the cable cannot be chewed, and that it is not too low to the pups.

Depends on what time of year, really. We whelp ours indoors then move them along with mum into the creche when they're more mobile, meaning I don't have to worry about stranded/stuck pups who might get cold quite so much. We always try to avoid winter babies, making the whole thing a little easier but certainly if we had an autumn/winter/early spring litter a heat lamp would be a definite.

I use poultry lamp on a long para cord that way I have bit more control over heat lengthen shorten even left to right with extra hooks.

if ive got gas left from pheasant sheds ill use them with gas brooder but electric mones are fine and cheap to run if near a power source get yourself a thermometer and leave in shed just to keep a eye on them.

in summer I very rarely put heat on in the day as it is useally spot on but my sheds are insulated and hold heat well the odd day this year doors and side hatch was left open untill temperature started to drop just watch the pups nody language and before u know it there 8 weeks and there starting to go
