If you had a covering of snow it is almost impossible to get pigeon to decoy .

Although its never easy to shoot good bags of pigeon this time of year your lack of success say you are not shooting where the birds want to be and in that case you are always going to be up against it.

Could be many reasons but my guess is.

Are you the only one with permission on the field? It could be that it's over shot,if it's been shot 4/5 times they generally don't return.

I've 5 osr fields close to me and have all been over shot by various folk and I doubt you could shoot more than a couple, there were 2 guys shooting today and I don't think I heard 6 shots all morning.

Not always easy but I try not to shoot the same field within 2 weeks,if your field has an adjoining wood try just standing still in it and shoot incomers at least that way you only need to carry gun and carts.

Anyway don't give up winter is a hard time

  • 4 weeks later...

Is there any tree lines on or near the OSR,try using Lofters higer the better,as we all know pigeon are hard to decoy in winter, due to them being flocked up.lofters have worked for me not all the time but better success than magnets and decoys on the deck,at this time of year.good luck

Absolutely feel for you! Been there, done it and bought the tee-shirt. I have spent the last month watching birds on rape on one of my perms. Lots and lots of birds. They pile into one field, after a couple of minutes they all lift off for no apparent reason and fly to another, and then to another, before retiring to the trees and woods. The farmer occasionally lets off a rocket or two which makes them even more spooky. Anyway, last week I simply got fed up with watching them and set up on a field that had no birds feeding, and no birds over flying - in fact there were no birds in sight. I was working on the basis that the birds in the woods would see the magnet and feel obliged to have a look. Actually I was tempted by the fact that with the hide against the wall of an old barn I would only have to walk twenty yards or so - a big temptation for an old boy like me. Did it work? Yes and no. I got a dozen or so but there were long birdless spells which always seem longer when its cold. That's rape shooting for you!

we all have days like that,if its cold and snow on the ground to get pigeons to come in to a pattern is hard work, at the moment the birds in the area,s i shoot are generally sat up in the trees and only pop down for a quick feed, then back to the trees ,you will get lucky one day cheers
