Dr Syn's At It Again!

The wife said "Fancy a day out down the permission tomorrow?" yesterday so I replied in the affirmative and she got me the stuff to do a packed lunch. Which I got up and made this morning. 11am saw me deposited at the farmyard and 11:30 saw me set up and checking zero in the woodland. I waited for a while, ate lunch and then declared war on my new mortal enemies. A pair of rabbits I had named Castor and Pollux, or ******* and bow locks for the number of times I had been laden down with gear, on my way down to setting up and unable to get the rifle out of the bag!

The Daystate Mk 3 had been topped up to 220 bar (WP) and the gun had been charged up. I had checked zero and started up the track. A couple of rabbits saw me and dived back in the dead nettles. I carried on as I saw one of the dastardly duo in the middle of the track. There is no cover, none, I stood out like a sore thumb.

I continued towards the rabbit. it sat there, ears up, The other one appeared from the edge of the track and ran past it's friend and down another hole. I continued to advance, slowly. I got to 45 metres away and as I advanced so the rabbit retreated, the line was drawn! 45 metres. No wind. Lift up to 3 marks over zero, fire, rabbit flipped over, kicked and expired!

Rabbit casserole with black pud on the meal planner now!

I went back into the woodland. Three pigeons came in from the left. Landed high up. I took aim, fired and broke the branch in front of the damned bird! All three evacuated more quickly than they came in... The big wave came in. I managed to drop one who landed high and left 10 yards away horizontally, 30 foot up vertically! Nice head shot. Mixed casserole now!

They fluttered around unsure and landed again. I managed to bag a second with another headshot, this had landed behind so I turned round and managed to get a line through the fir branches! Clink, thwack, thud! 2 up. Pigeon pie and a rabbit and black pudding caserole!

Some had broken from the big wave and settled at the far edge. I would not be able to stalk these as there was a lack of cover along the path. I guessed at 30 metres, second zero point and aimed. Once again, click, thwack, this time there was a rustle as it hit a few leaves on the way down then thud! Big pigeon pie!

The sun had set and I had about 15 minutes of light left when the last came in to settle. The pigeons landed in the sitty tree behind me again. Shot through the fir tree, hit another. Casserole!!!

So a stalked rabbit and 4 roost shot pigeons later I called it a day!

excellent write up mole,,enjoyed that mate and nice shooting but can I ask a question,,?

why do you fill your rifle up to 220bar when your going out hunting as I find when my daystates are filled to their max WP the gun is not performing at its best or in the sweet spot,

I always make sure I put a full session in with a tin of pellets and the chrono and note the shots down on paper , I also graph it so I can see exactly where my rifles perform at their best,,as an example my wolverine b has a max WP of 210 but does not reach 11.6ftlb until it is at 170bar and then stays pretty much at that until 110bar then drops off until just below 100bar where the rifle stops,,

do you see where I,m coming from,,you could save filling the rifle to 220 and just fill to 170bar therefor saving air in your bottle

please don't think I,m being funny I am just trying to help

I found it did not make too much difference on the Mk 3. I just filled to the max as the bottle is down to 220 bar and will be going off soon for a refill and given current situation with my sister having cancer we might not be able to pick it up for a week!

The .177 Mk 3 is a superb rifle! I must run a full chrono test on it sometime!

I sold my MK3 for pennies-it was broken up and sold for spares-worst gun I ever owned but I'm with evo-never put more than 190 bar in mine. On a far more serious note-horrible news about your sister-I kinda know what she is going thru and its a living hell-sincerely hope its been caught early and that she is getting the best treatment-kindest regards-chris.

Mine was .177 and sporting "a barrel from one of the best batches we have bought from Walther to date" according to Mr Belas. Power dropped above 190bar and the gun took about 20 shots to stabilise if you put over 200bar in it. As the magazine indexed it would often throw a pellet into the action requiring frequent trips to R&K to have it fixed-even worse if you cocked the gun with the muzzle pointed upwards  Advertised it for £450 which was the cheapest on the market by a long way but only got £250 for it (it was LH though) for spares.

There is a little trick to the pellet in the mechanism saga, a cocktail stick! Use that to push the pellets past the rubber band. When mine was serviced last time there was a mangled pellet in the mechanism (not done by me). None in there now though! The cocktail stick really works! Mine seems to be stable at 220 bar, but I must do a full shot string to find out where the sweet spot is. Hey you never know I could be lucky and have a regulator in it (not a chance as it has a black cocking bolt)...

I used a Bic pen-file down the nib to the correct length and remove the ink tube-if you glue the bung in the opposite end you can fill the pen with pellets and pop the knib back on-hey ho a pellet storage device and pellet seater in one. Still threw pellets into the action though-and judging by remarks on the DS owners forum I was not alone in my suffering.
