Am I an early-warning system or just paranoid??

Many of my farmers ask me to clear my plans with them so they know what's going on, especially in the game season -fair enough.

This winter, at least 3 times I have found a nice quiet field of rape, hidden away and unprotected, which the birds are hitting hard. So I ring the farmer and he says "Get up there tomorrow, Boy" or words to that effect.

When I get there nice and early I can see no birds, no birds in the trees and no birds in nearby woods. What I DO find is gas-guns and rope bangers all over the place and rocket sticks.

Am I just being suspicious or are they playing my dedicated reccys like a violin??

Massively irritating when that happens so understand where you're coming from....whilst I understand farmers don't want pigeons on the rape, they'll phone up telling you how many are there and can you shoot them, then put bloody bangers out all over the place thinking you'll still shoot a load! They never learn! Many a nice shoot ruined with bangers and the like.

I think the answer is to tell the farmer when you plan to go, then ask if he would kindly leave the field alone until after you have been. It's in his interest, after all.

He said he'd already phoned the farmer who'd told him to 'get up there tomorrow' so you'd assume common sense prevailing they wouldn't rush off and put bangers out as soon as they put the phone down knowing he was coming to shoot the next morning?

At the end of the day though, the majority of farmers don't understand what goes into shooting a good bag of pigeons unfortunately.

well I wouldn,t do that if I knew someone was coming next day to have a go, but common sense isn't that common

Tried that, doesn't work - the excuse is that the "rocket-man" cannot be stopped (more than my job's worth)

These farmers think that if they chase pigeons off their land enough times the problem is gone WRONG!! All these birds will have to eat at some point, and will do so, even if it means 10 minutes here and there between gas-gun explosions. The only ones that don't eat are in the game dealer's chiller but I can't get the message across - in fact, all this flying about must make birds MORE hungry!!

Why don't you reccy, decide what day to go and then ring your farmer on the day and say I've seen pigeons on so and so field,I'll get over there right away.

That plan means I can't be out there ready at (near) 1st light but might work for afternoon feeding. It does assume you can contact him at all times, text wouldn't work that well.

Or just do what i do . IF i find myself in that situation all do it drop them a text or phone call saying " im going to have a look at so and so field tomorrow . Farmers then àsks if i have seen much activity in the area . To which i reply no not really however i would rather be set up in the area just in case they do turn up . After all its no good me getting there after the damage is done . ... farmer pauses for a second . Hmmm great idea stevo .

you crack on . And let me know how you get on .

Later on i phone him and say ... blimey i got there just in time . I shot blah blah .... he replies stevo your ace !!

Everyone happy ;-)
