at last, a bit of movement!

With the unprecedented beech mast last year, there has been no shooting in my area. The birds were really spread out. Also with the ridiculous mild weather they didnt flock. However, things are changing. They have nearly cleared the big woods and are being forced to flight out a little. I have been watching 1 area all week, and decided to give it a go this morning.

Got there about 10am and put about 300 out. No decoys, just got settled in and waited to see. They came back fast in the wind about about half the height again of the trees. I was a litlle rusty. The cartridge count wasnt good, but I eventually got 2 down. I put them on the magnet about 100 yards in front. My master plan was to focus their attention into the area were I was standing. I knew they would overfly and make for beech trees were I was standing.

It worked pretty good. Every bird was memorable, really high, really fast. I had just over 40. The drought has hopefully ended and I have to say, it was the most enjoyable and sporting day I have had for years. Not a big bag, but good fun.

I will try to sort out the pic later

Good lad. Still no volume of birds in my area.

Cheers ollie. Same here. No big volume of birds. I dont expect to do the same thing this weekend! They are still on the beech nuts, but this lot came off a really good flightline and they were broke up in small groups which allowed me to get into them.

That sounds interesting, would it work similarly for roost shooting?

Excellent result Dr D , the sort of day I look for but very rarely find . Well done .

As for working when roost shooting , it can work , but like all forms of pigeon shooting you need ...........Pigeons , wind in your favour , and plenty of movement plus a bit of luck.

I have had good afternoons in February when a lot of the woods have guns in and the pigeons are moving around, then if your lucky enough to have some sitty trees and the wind is on your back it is worth putting a magnet well out to turn them towards the trees and give you some shooting you wouldn't have had without it being out..........Worth giving it a go , and who knows you might end up with a good bag.......Good luck.
