Land Rover discovery TD5

I have a discovery 300tdi that I've have for a year now that's just used for shooting, no problems whatsoever,

I'm now thinking of selling my car and buying a td5 2004 but I've heard a few bad reports on the td5,

So I'm looking for anyone who's had one or got one or know of anyone who's had one.

I just copied and pasted a reply I put on a similar post not too long ago:

 

I've had my 53 plate Disco for some 3 years now. Outside of servicing I've had very little to do for a car which is now 12 years old. I drive the car every day which involves 50/50 town and motorway driving.

 

I've changed:

1 Fuel pipe (around £40)

1 brake sensor (Around £10)

Drivers side window regulator (Less than £20)

Power steering pump (which I knew was leaking when I bought it) (£300)

 

Love the car, great to drive, great off road and parts readily available at very good prices.

I have owned my 03 td5 for 6 years now. Would i buy another absoloutely yes! although i sometimes miss my old 300tdi, the td5 has been great. I don't do a lot of off road in mine but it gets me where i need to be in the shooting field.

The wife also drives it and loves it. looking back over 6 years it has had bits and bobs but nothing really major, it will cost me this year as it needs a clutch and flywheel, but at 130 000 miles i expect that and the car hasn't cost anything in repairs in the last year.

Even on this mileage the engine is sweet with plenty of torque and everything steering wise feels solid.

 

I think the the early td5's had a few issues but an 04 would be an excellent truck if well looked after.

The Disco 2 TD5 is a fine car if you take the time and care to find a good one. There’s an awful lot of less than good cars offered for sale, you do need to be picky and patient. Go for as late a vehicle as you can find; bear in mind even the late ones are now getting on for 11 years old.

 

Mine’s a ’54 plate TD5 auto ES Premium and it’s never been any real trouble. The only thing that I’ve had to replace (other than normal service items) is the fuel filter head as it corroded so much it leaked fuel. It’s located in a stupid place and gets covered in muck and water. The CD auto-changer sometimes messes about but only needs a quick poke to put right.

 

TD5 engine is a good unit and not too bad on fuel. I get about 26mpg on average. It’s used for work and play (off road, not too demanding though). The equipment level is good and it all still works! As with any vehicle, correct maintenance is essential but on the Disco it’s not too demanding or expensive if you DIY. Tons of help and advice on the internet if you get into trouble (D2 Boy’s Club recommended).

 

Of all the cars I've owned in recent years, the D2 is the only one I actually look forward to driving. The others were/are just a means of getting around.

 

Ignore those who will condemn the Disco. I suspect most of them have never sat in one, let alone owned one, and are just regurgitating carp spouted by others.

 

Go for it I say – find a good one and you’ll love it

well iv done it, iv bought a 2003 d2 120,000 miles with fsh, and its in fantastic condition, no rust, dents or bumps,

taxing it at end of the month after its been fully checked out, serviced and valeted,

looking forward to getting out in it.

I drive a V reg disco td5, i can honestly say it's been the best vehicle I've owned. The only thing I've had to replace is the UJ's in the front prop. I will definitely be buying another when the time comes. Admittedly I still love jumping in my old D reg 90, certainly makes you appreciate the more refined disco.

Lee, I don't know where you bought your Disco, but if it needs anything doing I can thoroughly recommend 'Green Oval' at the top of Gelderd Road. Independent L-R specialists, superb workshop and great staff. I'm not connected with them, just a satisfied customer. Enjoy your new car! Don't believe all the 'nay-sayers', I would hazard a guess that L-R haven't had as many recalls as Toyota...

I ve had had my 04 Disco from new and covered 156,000 . I use it as a working tool and abuse it quiet often , I've repaired the passenger window lift , broken spot weld replaced injector harness , oil ingress. Front propshaft , grease nipple removed due to cost saving at the factory. Three air springs due to mud ingress when off road and chaffing when lowered to road mode.front exhaust down pipe, split.

 

I enjoy the comfort and the air con after a hot days shooting . I currently achieve about 28 to the gallon , I would recommend the Disco 2 to anybody as an ideal shooting vehicle. I'm looking for a low mileage auto to put in stock as a replacement for my current Disco they can then use it as a hearse when I pop my clogs.

Second recommendation for D2BC for help and support. I have owned my D2 for 18 month now and that website was an absolute life saver. If your handy on the spanners they are really cheap to run as parts are readily available and cheap as. Have to remember even a 2004 is a 10 year old car now and there are a few known issues and most very easy to fix. I personally fell foul of the oil pump bolt failing at the start of this year - queue a new engine so obviously I would recommend getting it checked in the first service you have done.

 

Rust is the biggest risk with them so take your time choosing. lots of comfort as well as capability and bolt on goodies.

Got a 2003 one, Had 300tdi before that but the the td5 is a lot better had it 2 years now, Have a good look at the underneath for rust changed window lift and injector harness and sealed sunroof but they all leak anyway.

Mine's a 2004 ES Premium, twin sunroofs, and neither leaks. Just keep the drain tubes clear... :)

Not sure about the rubber body strips, i would imagine it's to do with model spec ie an es model might have them where as an s model won't. waste of time Imo.

The main difference between the 300 tdi and the td5 is the engine the 300tdi is a 4 cylinder turbo and the td5 is a 5 cylinder turbo with electronic fuel injection. the td5 is chain driven whereas the 300 has a rubber cam belt.

Other differences on the d2 include air suspension and active corner enhancement on some models.

 

I could go on but those are the main differences.

Sold my TD5 recently as the lad needed a car to learn in. Great car and had no real problems apart from the usual turning into a swimming pool each time it rained.

 

Never did the the electric sunroofs sealed properly.

I sealed the sun roofs and the carpets remained wet so got my sun to check the air con tubes either side of the gearbox, they have a wierd tulip valve system to stop ingress while wading. Cut this off and got covered with water . Carpets dry as a bone in any weather now.

i dont know if its just the difference between the 300tdi and the td5 but been out in it today and going up a long hill approached it around 40mph but a third of the way up i had to change down to 3rd from 4th and there seemed to be a lack of power when i put my foot down, even had to change in to 2nd gear, and for a moment i thought i was going to have to go into first, but the turbo kicked in and it was ok, by then i was at the top of the hill, dont know if there like that, or if its just bad turbo lag, or is there something not right?

Nice!

They can be a bit turbo laggish sometimes, driving them a bit harder helps.

 

You can also have the Ecu re-mapped and that can make a big difference. Talk to your service guys if your concerned about power.

 

Mine used to look like this picture.

 

But now has no side steps and chunkier tyres on.
