If you are a CPSA member you will have /should have seen the survey asking you about English Skeet. Please take 2 mins to fill it in , even if you don't shoot skeet!!!. The cpsa are looking at what will improve participation, be honest . if you wish to make comment on here also, I can put that into the feedback process.

Many thanks,

Its not just skeet though is it. Sporting has become more popular at the expense of other disciplines. One of my local grounds used to do DTL and Skeet then ABT was added.

Now its mainly sportrap and allround, with compack making inroads Dtl, Skeet and Abt have taken a back seat.

Lakenheath has closed along with Bentwaters (years ago). They (IMHO) were the two major grounds to go to in E Anglia. Also the 'Lack of skeet layouts' may also have a bearing, as in some parts of the country there are none or a long drive to get to one. Financially people have only so much to spend, so will do the most enjoyable - this seems to be sporting.

Is enough done to promote the discipline? ???? especially on people new to shooting.

Nearly all newcomers i know of always start on sporting with there mates (wrong in my view, as it teaches bad habits). Skeet is an excellent sport with so much to offer newcomers and should be used as a bedrock to shooting. Unless your only interested in trap style disciplines the latter does not really apply.

Off for a couple of rounds tomorrow - weather permitting

I've seen the notice about the survey on the CPSA website but not yet bothered to look at it as I don't shoot Skeet seriously nowadays.

I gave it up many years ago after I got my first, (and only) 100 straight in a Registered event at Mepal GC a good few years back.

Having said that, I would always urge newcomers to Sporting to shoot as much Skeet as they can, because it definitely improves your performance at Sporting, if you get proficient at Skeet you won't miss many birds inside of 30 yards, so you only need to worry about the long ones..!

Nowadays, far too many newbies to Sporting want to shoot ESP for a couple of years, then jump straight into FITASC,.....a big mistake IMHO, they need to get up to a certain level in ESP, and the best way to do this is to shoot Skeet on a regular basis.

Yes, some say it's boring, but ask George Digweed how many Skeet targets he shot to get where he is today in ESP.....?, literally thousands and thousands, I kid you not..!

Sadly its hard to justify a good run at skeet when a lot of sporting is offered. Shooting is quite a social sport. But more are drawn to sporting.

Shooting skeet on your own sucks!

Yes, of course it sucks if you are silly enough to shoot it on your own, everybody I know shoots it in a squad..

Much more fun that way..?

i started by shooting skeet and hated it. i was lucky to get 13 out of a round.

it wasnt untill i changed my gun and instantly got better scores that i started to enjoy it.

it has paid dividends by teaching me to swing the gun properly if nothing else.

newbies can learn alot by starting on a skeet layout.

Skeet is ideal pigeon decoying practice. Lots of crossing variations as you move around the layout plus a couple of incomers and going away targets. Everything you will come across whilst sitting in the hide. I found my concentration would lapse by the 3rd 25 and by the time I was on the 4th my scores had dropped considerably.

  • 2 weeks later...

Having a skeet ground that doubled its charges overnight and drove away just about everyone who shot there is not a good way to increase participation.

PM me please the details . Its a fair comment

easy , you go and shoot registered its all squads , talk to people and get involved.

if you don't shoot skeet , find it boring etc please do the survey , we need your input as to why you don't . Please don't do nothing , just spend 2 mins and have an input. Personally I find sporting is the most boring thing I've shot. Too much standing around and too many talking about all sorts( polite version, I've refereed enough to listen to it all).IMHO its not like sporting at all.

I shoot trap, skeet, some sporting and sportrap , it all helps with my game. At the end of the day the best analogy I can come up with, is we all don't drive the same car do we? so like our shooting we all like different things , no one shooting discipline is any better or worse than any other. The skeet sub committee is just trying to find out what can be done to encourage more to skeet.
