SX3 cycling problems

I am no expert on autos so could do with some advice!

My SX3 cycles everything fine apart from Winchester 3.5 inch Drylocks (the only goose cart I can get locally). Occasionally it cycles them fine but most times it ejects the fired cart fine, the bolt closes but no new cart has been cycled, it remains in the mag tube.

Stripped and cleaned it completely but it makes no difference. Looking at the mecahnism, and this may be wrong on my part, I assume that the reason the 2nd cart doesn't leave the mag tube is because the bolt hasn't moved for enough back in the cycle process to trip the little bit of metal back out of the way of the mag tube to allow the new cart to be pushed forward and cycled.

Has any one come across this, any fixes????

Sorry for replying so late, but this happened to mine and I went through all the stages:

 

Stripped and cleaned the whole gun;

Checked the gas piston for crud on the inside and any breaks in the spring;

Checked that both split rings on the piston are running free (can revolve without catching)

Check that the magazine tube (sorry don't know the correct name) has not been bent

 

After trying all of the above, it might be as simple as corrosion on the magazine or magazine spring.

 

I eventually 'fixed' mine by flooding the inside of the magazine tube with WD40 (a messy job to be done outside) and then pouring some cheap gun oil (the stuff that comes free with cheap cleaning kits) down it so that it ran all the way through.

 

Mine started playing up when I dropped it in salt water and didn't clean it properly afterwards - so I only had myself to blame

 

Now I make sure that the magazine has a fresh coating of cheap gun oil before every outing and I also (for good luck) rub a tiny amount on every cartridge as I load it.

 

It still has the eventual failure to cycle, but not enough to warrant throwing the damn thing away!

When I bought mine this year, I asked the gunsmith what I could realistically hope to put through it, with regards to lighter loads.

He told me that it wasn't a case of how light or heavy they were, it was more to do with the size of the brass on the cartridge.

I haven't used Drylocks, so I can't be too sure how long the brass is on them, but the gunsmith advised a minimum of 18-19mm.

I have two other shooting friends who have put Drylocks through Hatsan Escorts this year, the 3" have been cycling through with no problems, but the 3.5" did have a couple of hiccups. He found that a very light coating of a spray on grease was all it needed around the brass for them to eject and cycle.

I was shooting Hull Superfast 27grm the other day, absolutely no problem. (3 1/2" chamber) They only have about 7-8mm of brass.

 

I have a box of drylocks, If I get the chance I'll try a couple and let you know

That sounds like rubbish to me. I wouldn't have a semi that couldn't cycle cartridges with short brass.

It probably was, he was selling me a gun, but as the only cartridges that I have put through it have been Mammouths and Remmington Nitro's, I don't have any proof that they don't cycle.

I very much doubt it would be the bolt not coming back far enough with a 3.5" cartridge , if the bolt was not travelling back enough then chances are the fired case would not have room to eject causing a jam.

31/2" drylock can be a little over length I have a few cases that I reloaded and they are on the long side . this can some times make the gun hang up on the second shot

I am not sure about the Dry locks , but some American cartridges seem to come in a wide variety of loads and speeds , like Remmingtons ( it seems every time I buy Remmi Sportsmans of the same load they are different speeds.). My old Baikal s\a used to be fine with Mammoth 42 gr 3.5 loads but would jam every time with 3.5 40 gr loads. I would guess that the pressures are different with each load. My present Browning Gold does not like recycling 3 and 3.5 inch when loaded at the same time. Its fine with 3 inch or 3.5 inch loads , but does not like them mixed.

Took this slow mo yesterday. You can see how every stage happens. The one that I had that jammed came half way out of the mag tube and got stuck when it was too be lifted up. It's never happened again tho.

 

Is the catch on the inside of the action, the one that releases the cart from the mag free? It would be easy to neglect and become gumed up stick?
