Flocking Pigeons

The problem with our pigeon shooting is that as the season on the rape proceeds so does the Flocking Process, as the more gas guns are set out on fields the birds tend to stay tight flocked and you have a great deal of difficulty in getting them to decoy or return to the respective field in small numbers. So Friday saw us visit three farms with rape and the flocks moved off , never to return. We ended up on a field of rape that has never seen a gas gun and as we walked the birds off they passed over us and dropped straight back in. It was 13.00 when we set up the decoys and the magnet and the wind was a south westerly left to right after an hour it moved to a north westerly which was a left front to right rear which made it interesting shooting. The hide position is very critical on this field as its the only safe way of shooting . We shot till 15.30 and picked up sixty four birds which was a good result for the number of birds on the field.

Saturday morning was sleety rain and I'd received a text stating a thousand pigeons on one of our farms so we headed out to see this throng of birds. When we arrived it was still raining and we counted two flocks on the farm of a bout one hundred in each, as we got out of the Disco they just lifted and left the farm so we moved on. Over the past three weeks we have see a small five acre field of rape with bags as scarecrows , these have been destroyed by the wind over the past two weeks and it has had birds feeding hard. We have tried to find out who now farms it but all investigations have failed . So as it was raining and we did not want to get wet we started to knock on doors. We managed to get the farmers name and the name of his farm and a location about five miles away , so off we set . We had to ask at a few farms before we actually found the farm and as we were driving in a four by four was just leaving which was the farmer . We quickly introduced ourselves and gave him our cards and explained that we wanted to shoot the pigeons . He asked us for contact of a farm we shoot on and said he would ring us back in twenty minutes. We thanked him and let him go. We drove back to the small field and waited. After twenty minutes the phone rang and he said the farmer was out shooting but his wife recommended us as good pigeon shooters!!!! So he said carry on, we thanked him again and set up on the field with the strong wind off our backs and twelve decoys from the day before, no magnet. It was 12.00 and the first birds came back straight in , the next hour was crazy and the birds just kept comming and after that it started to tail off , we had the odd flock of five or six birds come after we had heard a gas gun go off in the distance. We packed up at 16.00 and picked up one hundred and thirtyfour birds. We contacted the farmer to thank him for the day and he was very happy and told us to help ourselves in the future. Brilliant result.

I admire your commitment to finding the owner of fields you want to shoot. It certainly paid off today with your shoot and with the added bonus of future shooting on that farm

The weather looked decidedly awful today as I headed down the M42/M40 at about 9.00am so I take my hat off to you for venturing out at all!

That's the way to do it.

Dr D will not like those serried ranks.

Not at all. I can fully appreciate the artistic endeavours in both approaches. Great shootin as per usual. p.s. I dont think that bottom photo is out of focus, if you close one eye and stare long enough, theres a hidden message of decoying enlightenment.

cheers for that pc, I,ll return the favour

I am impressed that PC remembers those little letters and numbers to record the date and the bag.

he carries them in his shooting jacket so never forgets them

Good write up as always. :)

I know why the dog always looks so sad its having by on spit all those mouth fulls of loose pigeon feathers out.

We have a game when we are packing the birds into the carrying bags , he sits downwind and chases the loose feathers that fly during the process. As you say you would have thought he'd had a enough of feathers during the retrieves.
