Metro poll on fox hunting

I voted no as the ban gives me more foxes to shoot  besides, hunting of any type is cruel. I like my meat to be transported hundred of miles crammed like sardines into a lorry, then to wait in line patiently while its pal in front is beaten and gets its neck stamped on by a couple of knuckle dragging thugs in white coats before having its throat slit. Now that's what I call humane :good:

Just as long as I don't have to see any of it :ninja: ...

:) There was an article on the BBC news the other night commenting on the 10(?) year anniversary of the ban. Considering it came from the beeb, I was quite surprised to find it quite a well balanced report. It reported on incidences of claimed wrong doing by hunts and even showed hunt supporters being attacked by masked antis.

One hunt follower was asked his opinion on why the ban has made no difference to the numbers (of foxes) being killed, and he said it was due to the numbers being shot, and when asked if he thought this was worse, he said yes, but failed to say why.

There has been a big retail business built up around the shooting of foxes since the hunting with dogs ban came into being; I would be very interested to know if there were any figures available to indicate the numbers of foxes killed on an annual basis by hounds and guns prior to the ban, and what those respective numbers are now.

Hunting with dogs when caught a fox will be dead or if they don't caught, get away free. With shooting, foxes can hit but not killed outright or at all. Also there is the argument that weaker or ill foxes with be caught while healthy individuals would be able to escape. Shooting is unselective.

I would say that more foxes are killed by shooting now since the hunting ban than were killed by hunts over the same given area and quite possibly the country.

As you say, shooting foxes has now become a sport in it's own right, just look at the kit available, videos and the number of pictures posted on here.

I would argue that hunting was better for the fox as a species than shooting, simply because more are killed now.

I'm sorry, I've heard this point of view before and it just doesn't stand up to scrutiny nor logic. Hunting with hounds does nothing for me but I'm not against it, I just think those who wish to see it's return need to make up their minds what it is they're doing. Is it sport or vermin control? If it's either, or both, then have the honesty to say so.

I can agree that there is always a risk of wounding (having just watched one of 'The Warrener's DVD's) but for some to suggest the theory that healthy foxes escape while only old or diseased foxes are killed while hunting with hounds is just ridiculous. I have never heard of a hunt digging out a fox and then releasing it safely back underground on discovering it to be perfectly healthy.
