For a while now I've been looking for my next gun as I've an opening on my FAC. Well the older I get I seem to be acquiring a small collection of unique antique rifles and my search continues. The origin and history fascinates me, where and how it survive till the present day ect.

So I'd been trawling the Internet for months and had my heart set on single shot take down Holland & Holland in .22 LR. Came across a couple of nice examples but the money I was spending they had to be right. Unfortunately when it came to the crunch nether were quite right!

The Shooting Show came around along with my birthday and went down there Friday. After spending an amount on steel C/F targets I was not really looking for anything. Then I came across a couple of double rifles and wondered over. Talking to the dealer from Market Harborough and ask about a smaller calibre to which he produced a H&H Royal take down.

Deep dark walnut, good original blued barrel, fine checkering and open sights. My cash was almost gone but for the fact it was a 1902 rifle that some numpty had put modern weaver mounts, cut and screwed into the top of the barrel, Arrrrrrrr! Gutted Gutted and Gutted. Had to walk, no way of correcting it, no way I could live it.

After a 20 minutes I saw a sign for Brown Trout of Harrogate, I used to pop in there when Sharon's mum lived just around the corner from the shop. As I walked in instantly a small rifle caught my eye, knew straight away it was a small calibre, old and in good condition so asked if I could have a look.

The word H&H slipped from my mind, this was very different and unique. Pre WW11 Mauser Mm 420B .22LR. It was told it was the property of the RFDs father who was getting to old to shoot and was time to let it go. I know, I know salesman's sob story and I thought the same. Long and short after a chat about the gun I left walked to the end of the isle turn round and bought it.

When I went to pick it up on the way out the RFD had called his father and he was over the moon it had gone to someone that will use it not just look at it. Then he gave me his fathers phone number as he wanted to tell me it's history, so the story was true and I was chuffed. Came home to do some googling found a few similar and a couple with the same scope.

Today I had a call from Mr Brown Snr the previous own of the Mauser. What a conversation I had. I won't go into it all now as I'm going to meet him in a couple of weeks for the low down on how it came to the uk after the war.

But I can say this much.

The rifle totally original including factory fitted scope and mounts. Plus I'm the 4th owner.

I've no problem sharing the story but as for price sorry I don't wish to publicly post that.

Understand absolutely, forgive me for asking :good:

That looks great, all it needs now is a barrel chop back to 14" thread and mod stuck on the end :) [joke, obviously]

And a thumbhole laminate stock? A scope with a side wheel like a landy steering wheel?

The sort of brownish/ purpleish tinge to the colouring to some of the steel like on a Habict scope that I have. Considering the age and the fact that it has had four owners it is in remarkable condition. It must have had very little use and been very well mantained considering it is in the region of 80 years old. Really nice gun find espesially with the history.
