krwigan
Hiya lads, just wondering if anyone is does any ambushing with the air rifle through the colder wet months. If so, what are you using to sit/lie prone on when in the field? Thanks KR Edited February 19, 2015 by krwigan
secretagentmole
One of the roll up foam camping mats! Stops the wet and the cold striking through to you! About a tenner from most army surplus shops! Like that one! Edited February 19, 2015 by secretagentmole
Salop Matt
No I only lie up and weight in the spring and summer as the bunnys come out if they are in a focused area !
krwigan
Thanks mole that's what I've used in the past, think I'll stick with it. Is that a nv unit? Do you ambush in the night with it? I've tried that but I find range finding a nightmare with the nv
secretagentmole
Simple, measure distance from where the little darlings appear, lay down at the end of the point blank zero range and make a noise like a carrot. That way they appear in front of you and you have them in range! Edited February 19, 2015 by secretagentmole
lineshooter
I used to use a plastic pop bottle crate with some foam on as a seat, doubles as a handy carry basket when turned the other way, only ambush in the warm weather now, too old for sitting in the damp and cold, might get piles...... secretagentmole
Problem is you boys do not dress properly, you layer up. Two pairs of socks, trousers, camo trousers, t shirt, thermal shirt, sweat shirt, camo jacket, gloves and decent boots and you stay warm even if you lay in the same place for hours! A flask of hot drink works as well but don;t have a sugar free hot drink, instant hot chocolate has calories and you will keep warm absorbing the sugars as well as the war liquid! Prone position ambush shooting means no problem with piles too!
krwigan
I agree with mole, prone for ambushing every time, never taken a flask before though! Will have to try that one!

Mole, I'm too close to 60, putting all that clobber on and then having a hot drink means I need to widdle every 30 minutes, I can't lie prone because my back seizes up and then I can't stand up or walk without looking like the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I already have piles anyway! The best form of ambush for me is to park the car near the warren/decoys/sitty tree and wait in the warm in a leather heated seat. If there happens to be something close enough to shoot when I happen to wake up then fair enough. If not, then at least I've had a good snooze. Actually I do ambush but only from a chair, I only lie down in fields for one reason and that remains private and between me and Mrs tt. timmytree
Seriously though, why go prone? It's uncomfortable, you need a bipod, you can't see out in front very well and you always have the risk of a blade of grass between you and the quarry. Get yourself a green plastic garden chair and hack the legs down to about 10 inches, use a bit of camo net and a couple of road pins with a stick between them to form a simple screen, Use shooting sticks to rest your rifle on, problem sorted. I've tried prone, it's ok for targets but for live quarry I find it the most uncomfortable position ever invented. You have to ask whether it's worth doing though, personally I haven't got enough rabbits or pigeons at the moment to make it worthwhile so a quick walk is enough. Once the warm spring and summer days arrive? That's a different scenario! Sat in the corner of a field in late evening sunshine with fish and chips and a bottle of homebrew, heaven! As for getting home, On occasions my Mrs will drop me off and pick me up. Sometimes I'll take the tent and sleep on the farm. Either way, I don't risk my licence, more often than not it's a flask of tea with the Fish and chips and a good snooze with my back against a gatepost. secretagentmole
Apologies for thread hijack Could I ask what nv you have on your Gun , is it homemade ? Thanks It is a Night Eye NE 500, a professional built version of the home brew kits. Goof for 200 metres plus in even bad conditions. Not available anymore sadly put out of business by the homebrew lot. They were priced under the price of an NS 50 with colour monitor and built in IR source! Underdog
I have used a pop up blind before now. Holly bushes make good blinds hollowed out and a simple seat added makes for a few hours peace waiting for what may pass by! This photo is from a holly bush blind of mine. U. I've had to adapt since spinal surgery, plus the old knees take a hammering getting up right ... the seat is, seat - come haversack ... the picnic table gives me a bit more stability .. plus it only weighs a kilo. Rifle/seat-bag all over shoulder and table in hand .. its the future ! Edited February 19, 2015 by hoggysreels

secretagentmole
I have an alternative to prone as well, a ruddy great Shakespeare tackle box on a beach wheel frame. Will take no end of equipment, food, camo netting etc. Carp anglers sometimes have a similar rig to that too. Just takes too damned long to get in the car!
