Roost shoot

Well out roost shooting this evening once again in the woodlands of East Yorkshire.

Last time i posted, i reported things were slow on the pigeon front an sadly on our third night of the anual February shoots pigeons seem to be a bit thin on the ground.

Tonight was another one of those evenings with very little wind and bright clear skies, far from ideal to be waiting for pigeons to come into roost.

Despite the conditions the pigeons are simply not around the area of East Yorks we are shooting at the minute, the usual large flocks we see hitting the rape seemed to have dispersed and moved on.

Tonight the first hour saw the birds at high altitude even by Mr Digweed's standards.

Things improved as darkness aproached and shot's were heard coming from each surrounding wood.

I finished at 5.50pm with 8 birds picked, most of which were very satisfying even though they required both barrels

As you would expect all of the pigeons were stuffed to bursting with rape, although any pigeons we are seeing seem to be turning there attentions to grasssland at the moment.

A few pics from both last week and tonight :good:

You seem to be stood right in the open, was the pigeons seeing you?

They might not of done as i see your well camouflaged but surely there seeing the dog?

So in Yorkshire your anual roost is friday? In lincolnshire its Saturday. We have all the woods covered which really helps and we put rope bangers all over the place which really improves our chances. First night i got 24 for 32 shots not my best afternoon. Second night i got 15 for 19 looking forward for tomorrow night because wind is about 20mph and north-westerly perfect for the wood ☺

Gl to you next week!

Hi Jack 9494, thanks for your comment, Yes our roost nights are friday, they always have been in this part of east yorkshire, bit of a pain really as some people struggle to get away from work early enough, but the farmers are set in there ways and Friday's it is.

We usually expect the bags you are getting but are struggling on pigeon numbers at the minute. 20 is an average night normally.

I am stood in the open on the picture but this was early in the evening and the best place for a selfie :) i move to cover when the action starts :good:

It's been a poor do this year so far PB, not sure why really! as you know roosting is 'nt a numbers game and to shoot what we did tonight was very satisfying.

Well done for being out there and keeping the birds moving :good:

A few were out tonight my way but not a lot of shots heard. You still managed three more than i got tonight on my first roost shoot of the month.

Its very quiet at scarborough aswell. I was roosting at wykeham on Saturday evenings and we saw virtually nothing. I even packed up and came home last night it was that poor.

Lovely part of the world that, had many evenings in the Downy arms in the past. Suprised to hear your low on pigeon numbers too, with all that woodland you would expect a good pigeon population.

As I've mentioned in other posts, I can't shoot at the moment, (well all year in truth...) as I'm due to go into hospital for an op. on my frozen shoulder. However, the pigeons have been decimating one of the fields on my perm, so my b-i-l agreed to come over yesterday to shoot for me. All week long I've been seeing up to 100 ish pigeons on this particular field, settling into the trees, then dropping down into the field, and slowly moving across it, lifting off and settling down again, moving like a wave over the field. The rape has been hammered! Nothing but stalks, but still enough to tempt them. We set a hide up yesterday afternoon, came away, then went back later hoping for some roost shooting. Not one bird... Went down to the hide again this morning, but the wind had changed direction, and was now blowing directly at the netting. It had torn it free from the poles, tangled it into hawthorn bushes, and was blowing so hard we could barely see. Nonetheless, we re-tied the camo netting, and set up decoys. Within minutes, the shell decoys were flying over our heads, the netting was horizontal, and we were being pushed backwards far too close to the barbed wire behind us for comfort. Gave up and came back for a bacon sarnie... We'll try again another day.
