Hey guys, im going roosting later on and wondering if you got any tips. I like to get big bags and im not botherd about the sport i do it as vermin controll, although its nice to pop at the high ones.

First night i got 20 something for 30 so shots and the secound night i got a 10 or 12 for about 19 20 shots. Every night has been quite **** but there has been no wind and today there is about 15mph so that will help a little.

Please comment!

Thanks Jack

You posted this on the 19th " Complete novice to the pigeon shooting world, had limited days out throwing the decoys out and hoping for the best"

But by the 21st you like to get big bags

Your thread seems to show a lack of respect to your quarry , you seem to be making the mistake of taking on everything you hear good or bad , I know you were advised on another thread not to say you are shooting pigeon for sport , but there is nothing wrong with sporting shooting while protecting crops and pest or not the woodpigeon is such a good sporting bird they deserve our respect.

By saying things like "although its nice to pop at the high ones." makes it sound that you are happy shooting at birds where the chances of killing them cleanly is slim, this again shows a lack of respect .

So my tip is , think about what you write or say or you may not come across as you intend.

I've also been thinking what jack put and not sure how to read the not bothered bit in reference to vermin/sport bit. And as fenboy said the pop at the high ones too.

I will try and help you a bit. Respect your quarry whatever the circumstances. Don't be tempted to pop away at the high ones because those birds could turn into your wood which will help your bag. If you pepper them or injure them they will only fly off to a long lingering death. although they may be classed as an agricultural pest they are still a very sporting bird. If they wasn't there would be far less people trying to obtain shooting and very few shooting them.

What are you talking about? This is my first thread ive every made... What do you class "high" as? i only shoot at a bird if i can see the vital area's and know that if i pull that trigger there dead. A lack of respect? So dont you shoot at high birds? I would rather kill pigeons without blowing there feathers all over the place and making a complete mess of the bird...

You must be mistaking me for someone else mate.

However my other sentiments remain the same.

The op of this thread is new here and i can see where your coming from fenboy but i know from speaking to the chap in pm that he is of a farming background and therefore may perhaps seem a little direspecful of pigeons but many farmers as you know are at the recieving end of pigeon damage and can sometimes see them as rodents etc.

The lad seems keen on pigeon shooting and therefore perhaps should be given a chance here on PW .

I also see your point and respect what you say.

I've never met, spoken or PM'd Fenboy but have read many of his replies and posts since I've joined PW and always found his comments informative, fair, respectful and accurate...........most of all he is passionate and protective over the future of our pursuits and the shooting community.

Clearly a case of mistaken identity and no malice intended.

I agree everyone should have a chance and I would like to think something is lost in translation , which is why I suggested for him to consider how his posts may come across .

We all like to get big bags of pigeon but I would like to think most of us have some respect for our quarry and it is not just done as a kill at any cost exercise.

My tip is not to say things like 'I like to get big bags' and not to post too many kills to cartridge ratios as you have done.

I think one or two on here may disagree with you , but thank you.

I like the OP have not always come across as I intended, it can sometimes be difficult to see that over the internet.

Its my experience the more wind the lower the birds come into the wood and they don't spook as easy as they do when its still.

However, when its windy the birds twist and turn more and are harder to hit.

I don't know anyone who shoots really big bags roost shooting and 20 birds for 30 shots is a good return.

When its really windy I shoot near the edge of the wood and move further into the wood the less wind there is.

Your right lol. The birds do tend to just slip on the edge when its windy and come further in when less windy thanks for the only usefull think on this thread ☺

Guys just forget this thread happened, we all have different opinions and I just think pigeons are a beautiful animals which need to be controll because they cause millions of pounds in damage to crops. This may come across disrespectful but as aga man pointed out im a farmer who automatically thinks about the farming point of view.

Thanks for all the variety of comments lol. I think ill keep doing what im doing i dont need any tips for now...
