Waiting for the maize to be cut.

I have been watching the maize cover crops on this farm for a few weeks.I missed the first week or so last year but still had some fairly decent days shooting with guests before it was ploughed in.

I was told today at the farm that it is to be cut this week but i will have to keep going for a look as they are not sure of which day.

I did not see many pigeons about but a few crows were among some of the maize strips.

Still plenty of maize left on the plants so it should attract the pigeons once cut.

Anyone who asked for a day out should be ready for a call.

Very much doubt i will get a red letter day. This is out in the countryside and nowhere near any large town to shoot the semi tame town pigeons some shoot. But it makes it more of a challenge and no matter what i get i enjoy it.

Wood pigeons are Wood pigeons.

So, from this comment you are implying that anyone who shoots big bags of pigeons only does so because they are shooting semi-tame pigeons and not as challenging as the pigeons you shoot. Correct?

Well in that case, I have no idea what point you were trying to make.

Can be frustrating shooting these strips as the pigeons just tend to move on to the strips where no one is set up.

Largest strip is 50 x 300 yards and two others of 30 x 250 yards each one a field apart.

why don't you set up the most productive looking strip and flag the other two off ?

I know exactly what you mean. I have a number of permissions that border towns and the amount of times i've come up with the semi tame theory, they come direct from housing estates in 1s 2s straight into the decoys low across the field. However have other permissions very very remote and see 5x the numbers but they flock up this time of year and with the 10s of 0000's of acres of food out there they just move on. When the beans or peas go in however they cannot resist, or the milky laid barley, first field of cut rape!
