spinach
Think I may have been a bit rash!! Was offered a springer whilst beating from a friend of. The young woman came round and the sad story of divorce rehousing and her husbands agoraphobia all rang true. The dog is a lovely natured springer 18 months in the house biddable come sit fetch hide wait. Outside not bad until she goes a hunting! No fear of cars and no recall when turned off or is that on. So the question is ! I live on a smallholding surrounded by mine and others sheep. Would I shoot her if she wasn't mine , probably not but I would get my gun. Emma has fallen in love as has at least two of the kids, I will not keep a dog that can't recall! She doesn't have to be a gun dog but that would be good. Anyone any bright ideas before I go and buy the cocker I wanted!! I live in mid Wales so any knowledge of trainers would be very welcome. Thanks John. bigbird
She sounds fab lol!!! Right. When she's off hunting is it because she's done a Bogoff in the first place or have you clicked her off?
Bentos
Sounds like the same problem I had with my rescue hound... we went back to basics with her, got her mind set turned into listening to us so sit stay wait at food bowl etc. for recall we went to fenced in paddock and started to play games and call her back, if she did not come we went hard and sent her away and walked off, (forced her out of the pack) over time it started to work and now in the main she comes back, to be honest not ideal and not what I wanted will really consider rescue dogs in a lot more detail next time round. best thing we do though is go to dog training on a weekly basis, this has really turned her into a reasonably well behaved dog, so much she even did three days rough shooting with me last season, did not run in, but if she sees a deer then forget it, I refuse to call her back when she gets on at present as I am still not 100% on recall and there is no point training her to ignore my whistles. spinach
Bigbird, She bogs of ,she looks and runs differently , we're going back to lead only but not sure if that'll be helpful . She is a dog who seems to have been given too much space and too much crate in equal measure. I'm not sure I'm able or she's capable of coming round. I guess for her the safety element would be cars and neighbouring farmers. I don't need a gun dog but recall is a minimum requirement! We have 10 acres of woodland she can hunt through with us daily and would be able to dog in on a estate near us during the season. Ive seen many a good dog ruined by lazy owners and am not sure her adolescence appeared at the same time as her original owners divorce. One step foreward three steps back. John. panoma1
Not tried this myself but I heard of a teqnique where you attach a very long thin lead (some yards long) to the dogs collar, send the dog off from the sitting position then when the dog is in flight issue the stop/callback command, when he ignores it put your foot on the lead and it will pull him up short, he should after a few times associate the stop command with stopping, then you have his attention you can compel him to come back to you! Berettacocker
Good natured and biddable you say, start again from scratch on recall, and if necessary, use a check cord to coax her in gently. Think you'll be fine in a little time.
