Ghost throttle

My 1995 2l audi is messing about. When changing gear the revs bounce up about 200rpm and take a few seconds to fall back. This means very slow gear changes otherwise they are too jerky. I notice slso coming off the throttle the revs stay up for a few seconds before dying back slower than they should. Ive replaced the idle speed valve but its still doing it. It is doing my head in.

Any ideas gents?

i had something similar happen to my 2.3, it stopped after I cleaned the butterfly valve thing in the throttle body, does it race at all on starting?

No, its fine. It splutters a bit standing at idle every couple of minute but soon regains its composure. I changed the lambada sensor as well.

what about a temperature sensor? that can screw with mixture settings

my caddy had this problem but the symptoms were slightly different.

you need a code read young man

actually, what you really need is a Suzuki fr 80 2 stroke crunchy, seven whole horse power of wobbly speed,

It was pulsing at idle today between 1200 and 2200 rpm. It must be getting a gulp of air somewhere, thats what i thought Mac.

Andy- will google that. The revs shoot up as per design when mk1 foot is firmly applied but take ages to drop

Err could it be the agency

Or Fuel Spencer

Crank case breather!!! Its full of harry monk!!

we know what you've been doing! dirty boy

what about the oil filler cap, is that full of snot too? damp in the engine is common, and short journeys will compound the snot build up. but there might be a water leakage somewhere.

I had an old mazda that engine used to race before it warmed up properly, that turned out to be a blown head gasket

Has it been ok for the previous 450,000 miles? :)

lol!

I'd hazard a guess at dirty throttle body after throttle position sensor

It needs a good bit of stick. Its got a six hour run at the weekend so that should blow the last of the smeg out. Wish i hadnt bought the idle valve now! Other one was probably fine!

  • if the breather is clogged with sludge mate make sure you clean the maf sensor but be careful do NOT USE PETROL OR THINNERS but buy proper maf cleaner

I had to rod it out with leccy fence wire and then give it a blow. I over cooked it somewhat with the compressor and blew mayo all over my pals cortina. Good old blue roll, he never suspected a thing.

If its doing your head in then thats gonna need a skim-Cars eh? tut :innocent:

Quite! Otherwise i might blow a gasket.

I had one of them too! try cleaning the throttle body.

Its still idling irregulary. The throttle body was meant to hsve been done when it was serviced but sfter finding the jank in the breather i really ought to do it again.

Its running much better now but still not right.

Ive disconnected the cold start but it makes no odds.

i'm struggling to remember here as I had mine nigh on 18 yrs ago, but I seem to remember stripping nigh on every breather pipe and replace, including removing the rocker cover as even that had clogged up.

I drove it like i'd stolen it down to taunton last week, it still wasnt right. I popped the bonnet after janking up and could hear an air leak. Started fiddling and the hose to the idle valve was split. I ponced some sello from an absolute honey receptionist at the motel, wrapped it and it stalled dead. Started up and the revs dropped instantly after giving it a boot but wouldnt idle. Result!!!! I didnt even have a leatherman to try and wazz up the idle speed so foraged a cable tie to pack it out. Runs like a dream but despite idling okay from cold as soon as its warm its sitting at 1500rpm.
