Calling foxes during the day to the shotgun

Was on a vermin day on Saturday and there was a few foxes that didn't get shot by the walking guns but ran round and behind them. If I was to sit say couple of hundred yards behind the guns would the foxes react and come to a call ?

If so what call would you recommend ?

In my opinion if the fox has already been disturbed you will probably struggle to get it to come in to a call. The minute a fox associates a certain call with danger you are never going to be able to call it in again making despatching them with a rifle at a later date more problematic.

May be a case of changing the position and spacing of the guns to give you a better chance of shooting whatever comes past.

The only fox drives I've been on have included a couple of hounds, but I've never tried calling them during the day. Have stumbled across and shotgunned a few during the day but it's always been opportunistic and the foxes are usually naive cubs.

Recently watched a dvd of 'The Warrener' and he was calling them in any time of the day and night. He even shotgunned one which approached him, causing its mate to run off, but he called it which stopped it running off, and it came back in within seconds and he killed that one also.

I'd say welsh mike will be right, the fox is on edge and in survival mode it is not intrested inanything else, not saying a fox would never come to a call but chances will be slim and more likely just to educate it to ur calls.

Possibly try getting more walking guns on the side but not always easy surrounding a big wood.

Sometimes hounds can be a nightmare too thou, the time u spend boxing them up or if a ox gets away and hounds follow, mind 1 day chasing them round a massive forestry block for hours trying to get them back, kept on finding more foxes/scent

I agree with what everyone else has said but just to add that I would be slightly concerned over the safety issues that could arise. Fox drives can result in people that aren't that used to shooting foxes and excitement can take over, put this with some heavy cartridges and somebody lurking about at 'say a couple of hundred yards behind the guns' (I'm not saying the OP doesn't know but it's surprising how many people think 80-90yds is something like 150-160yds) and you potentially have a dangerous situation. All guns should know where all the others guns are on a fox drive. I would hate to think that a fox was to run back on the line for someone to turn round and take a shot with 50grams of BB's (or possibly bigger) at a 40yd fox thinking it would be ok as the man waiting at the back is easily 200yds away and there's no chance he could be hit.
