fenboy Posted March 6, 2015 Report Share Posted March 6, 2015 My farms do not grow spring sown cereals so I have a little longer to wait , the upside is they are growing even more peas this year and four fields of mustard compared to last years two, so hopefully i will have a bit to go at over the spring and summer months. I put my hand in my pocket and brought out a £20 note which I said was his if he spilled some beans round the headlands. I am afraid that my jesting fell on stony ground as it were. These new machines can to too d****med good, no spillage and all seed 4 inches down. Pray for a bad operator - I doubt if £20 will do it!! ShropshireSam Posted March 9, 2015 Report Share Posted March 9, 2015 I had barley been drilled on one permission on Saturday and another said he would be drilling peas this week. As for peas and beans on the ground....look for areas of fields that are heavier/wetter. Drills set for light land tend to struggle to bury seed in this soil so more likely to be seed left on the surface. If a very wet patch tractor driver may lift the drill out the soil to stop getting stuck...results in plenty of seed on surface....but need the birds to find it and not so easy if a small patch...and if they do find it then the seed won't last long. Spot on their JD one of mine has a field on a hill and equipment that is 30 years old he is putting in barley next week, cant wait to get on it had 3 great days last year. Blackpowder All farms in north Northumberland seem to have used the dry spell to take their chance to get their beans in BP. Many fields sown but nothing worth setting up on - yet!
