Forty Years On and Pigeons Everywhere

Recommended Posts

Yesterday we had a 05.00 am get up to drive to the Fens in Norfolk to mark forty years of first fishing the Fens for Pike and Zander. As we were driving along the M6 South and A14 we saw pigeons on most of the rape fields that ran along side the roads. when we arrived at the Old Bedford River just outside Downham Market not far from Denver Sluice. We walked along the river to our desired fishing spot , Forty years on. Opposite was a rape field and when we arrived it had about ten birds down during the day this rose to about fifty birds. They kept being spooked by the fighters flying overhead. It was a great day chewing the fat , no fish as the river was two feet down and was being pumped as it was running away from the sluice and the sea.

It was not a good day for fenland fishing in bright sunshine but it was frightening in the way that those forty years have gone and it was nice to see the pigeons spread all over the countryside, Happy Days!!!

There seems to have been an influx of pigeons into Norfolk over the last 10 days. I saw hundreds moving along the coast the weekend before last, Had a couple of small days with 40 birds in the bag on maze and even though it was a blank I found about 500 on a maze strip that once disturbed did not come back and a further 500 on a drilled field , but not on my land , but I know the farmer well and will be ringing him tonight. So at last things are looking a little brighter. Only one flock on the rape fields though , just 8 of them.

If I had known you were coming I would have popped over and said hello.

Shame about the lack of fish but the Old Bedford is not the river it was having suffered some fish kills in recent years.

In the brighter weather you would have perhaps have done better in the deeper water of the middle level 10 mins up the road .

I am pleased you were fishing and not on a mission to poach our pigeons
