Rim Fire

Its happened to me a few times now,

But what i cant understand is, each and every time its happened I heard a different noise, so I checked my rifle and did not chamber another round and fire it, instead i either packed up or as I now always take a cleaning rod out with the HMR I unblock the barrel.

Don't some folk notice when things go wrong, or just don't seem right.

same here I had it happen to me, you can tell that something is not right,

like you I always had a cleaning rod close by in case it happened

the only real case I know of the bullet was left behind when a round was chambered and un chambered. Maybe I've been lucky but I've put a few thousand rounds through mine since I got it from the gentleman above and its still going strong

I have read on this and other forums of at least two HMR ammunition brands having this problem.

I personally have had two that have fired the primer, which is enough to send the round up the chamber but not ignited the charge.I have also had four hang fires all with the Hornady blue tips. :unhappy: (out of approx 1000 rounds used)

Had no problems to date with the red tips.

I listen for anything untoward and look for the impact every time I fire a round, whatever rifle I fire.

It is a rubbish situation we are in with these faults but I would not be without my .17 HMR.

I was going to get one of these but not now the only time i want to use the cleaning rod is to clean the rifle not to push the bullet back out of the barrel i wonder how many times this has happened and not beeen reported if it is only one brand of amunition they should be taken off the market

The HMR has it's place in certain scenarios - One place I shoot the FEO won't allow for a bigger gun as there's seldom any foxes to worry about, but some bunnies to go after - however they are aways between 100-150 yards off and harder to get in much closer without much cover to stalk into. Have horses on the land too and the FEO got all jittery about letting me have a .22LR in case of ricochet (statistically compared to the HMR) - I argued my point on wanting both but he wouldn't...

Shame though as I really want a .22 too.

I've never had the problem of a bullet stuck in the barrel (yet - touches wood quickly) - but if I ever get a miss-fire I wait a bit and then when ejecting the round I ensure I check it over and check it's all intact before cycling a new one...

The one time I did this in the dark and dropped the bullet and couldn't find it in the nettle patch that min, I left my sticks as a marker and went back to the truck and took bolt out and checked through barrel in case... This was only the once in the last couple of years now, but I do get miss fires periodically (maybe one in every 50).

Officialism Mac! I have shot all calls around horses all my life.

U.

I know, I did highlight to him that I'm sure that people were shooting fine before the HMR but he wasn't having any of it - thought it best to keep quiet after he said no a couple of times or I'd only be out with Youngies spoon gun by now haha :-).

I've not had this happen on my Anschutz/Remington combination - yet - but have not fired too many rounds so far. As by its nature the cleaning rod is not too robust and particularly the female thread at the business end, just in case, I've pulled out a worn brush from its housing, gently flared the now open end of the housing to engage in the ballistic tip and if/when required screwing that on to the rod will protect the thread.

It may happen if two shooters are in action and the noises overlap and possibly confuse the report of a defective round? I have always thought it a weak choice but admitted its stronger points although onenof those was high vokume fire when rabbiting from a truck etc. precisely where this sort of confusion might occur sadly.

BUT, millions of these rounds if not billions have been shot, what is the statistical incidence of accidents?

This is the point, the ratio of this happening to the amount of rounds shot must be miniscule.

But what i dont understand is why is it happening what if a first time shooter gets hold of one

This is a very relevent point!

I know what to do because it has happened several times in Both my HMR's, as already said i carry a cleaning rod, someone less experienced may just get the bolt closed and i dread to think of the worse case.

Would it be worth a Sticky on this subject in the rifle section for new shooters researching HMR ?

you are correct that these things are usually % related before they are deemed a real issue, but not if it is you or someone you know maimed, blinded or worse
