Another glorious day.... but no pigeons

Well Blue and I ventured out Sunday with a spring in our step and a bag full of cartridges. With a low wind I knew there would not be masses around but it was worth a punt. We drove to the old farm house first but little was moving around and what was were sat on the little field which is between a main road and some very posh houses - no chance of shooting anything except with an air gun. Then onto the Brock but this was devoid of life. A quick mooch around and I found the little darling over the dyke in a large field that had just been drilled and sadly not on my patch. Back into the car and up to the next field and again little was moving as again in the next field were fresh drillings.....

So, we went back to the old farm and set-up along the hedge line to try our luck on luring a few over..... Blue had only been in the net hide only once before but was a star. He sat and watched me set-up the hide and then had a little mooch inside and then had a wonder around while I set-up the decoys. An hour and a half later and we had seen eight rooks of which only two came close enough for me to shoot; two wood pigeon which did not came anywhere close and a green woodpecker.

Back into the car and to the new farm house to do a little spinney cleaning. A slow mooch over the field to the spinney and another Rook went down. At the spinney I saw three good sized drays which I removed with some nicely placed number 6 and two little grey tree rats joined the heavenly choir.

Even though we did not shoot any woodies it was a great training day for Blue as we saw loads of cock pheasant and getting him to ignore them was great training or letting him go off and then come back was very rewarding. The best part of the day....... sat on a moss bank looking down over the fields, listening to the sounds that come with a Spring Sunday afternoon with my buddy beside me. It don't get much better.......

Total bag for the day - three rook and two grey squirrels - Blue wanted to retrieve them but remembering the advice I read we walked up to them together and I picked them up.

Marvellous isn't it? You post about going pigeon shooting and not shooting a single one but to you it doesn't matter a great deal.

This is how it should be.

One of these days Blue is going to say 'go and get it yourself' when you ask him to retrieve yet another pigeon having already shot a hat full.
