That is very interesting, I wonder what Ray says about it?

 

I don't use that method and keep the would fully sealed at all times. I've not seen any dieback from fungal attack but will check some old trees I did years ago. I use a pipe which is slightly smaller than the borehole and insulation tape would around the pipe to make a round wedge which seals it up.

The sealed container has the pipe running into the top and the whole container sits on the floor.

 

It could be argued that birch is a weed tree but let's not go there.
