a quick question for you home builders with an idea of electrics,

i am in the process of building my 1st diy nv build it will be built in a project box for all electrical components but the battery will sit attached to outside if i leave all the wires connected then box sealed with just the recharge point protruding so it can be re charged hope you following so far,

my question is if i do this and use up battery when out could i connect a spare to the charging point that protrudes as a spare or would i then be pushing 24v to camera and screen or would it still be 12v as the main battery will be flat

hope that makes sense

My logic is thus:

When I need a 12V supply in the workshop, I sometimes use a car battery charger.

When that's being used to charge a car battery, the +ve terminal goes to the +ve and vice versa.

So both +ves are joined together and so are both -ves. This is a parallel circuit so that's why I don't think you'd be putting 24V into your NV. I'm not an expert, by any means but I think you'll be fine

12v batteries in parallel = 12v output

12v batteries in series = 24v output

It's never a good idea to connect charged and discharged batteries together. You could fit a switch to isolate the depleted battery from the cct when you wanted to use the backup.

fit the battery to the rear of your project box,,if it runs out then just put a spare battery next to it and use elastic bands to keep it there then put the lead from the dead battery into the charged one, simples really,

in saying that , my kits have a battery on them and not once has it run low on power even after a whole night out shooting, infact I,ve actually been out on two consecutive nights and it still lasted ok with no problems at all

if going out night shooting I do always carry a spare, never ever used it though

and now i have taken cable tie off as that was holding it tight while glue set,

i have moved recharging cable into project box and added a switch on side to isolate for while charging it has 2 strips of velcro on top and 2 on spare battery incase i need extra power should i run out just pop on top and plug in charge port

The 12v DC designated cctv batteries from spycameracctv.com run for 8hrs continous.I stay clear of those blue batteries sorry but that my opinion.Like evo said a good battery will get you 2 to 3 nights out on one charge as you are not running it continous all the time.

Cracking job by the way, but have you tried mounting the battery behind the monitor, means you can get the monitor lower down which is better for head position.

the spare one i have is the one you mentioned i shall see how this blue one goes as its all built and don't want to change it before weekend but i will then change them over,

though i am going to try a build to go on the 410 hushpower next so may use blue one on that saves wasting it while it's still working,

what sort of distances can i hope for using the e700 and some good ir light source

Depends on your scope, Home built NV's don't like top end scopes the best scope i came across was a hawke 3-9x50 with parallax was brilliant clarity wise, you will be able to see further than your shooting capability but most importantly see your back stop.

i would say a 3 way blame activeviii evo and yourself lol

Yeh but I wouldn't of had a thread for you to follow so ultimately its evo's fault. When the postman comes,or a courier my wife says "that blooming evo" Edited by Davyo

looks sound colin, but one word of warning you will end up like me,davyo and mickmiller,

totally hooked on night vision,

the money me and dave (mickmiller) have spent on experimenting is unreal, camera after camera, ir after ir the lot,

I did warn davyo he would get hooked on it and he is, its bloody more addictive than any drug :lol:   , but drugs are cheaper,

enjoy mate and good luck with it

as soon as you shoot your first rabbit or fox with it you will be addicted to homebuilds,,ask davyo,:yes::good:
