20b 24g no 8

Or

12b 21g no 7.5

She is only just starting out to be honest so still working on the gun cartridge combo. The 20 seems to suit her better.

I'm just thinking about making it more comfortable for her so she can enjoy the day and not worry about the recoil

You will always be better off with a 12 gauge when it comes to clays and unless she is very slight she should be able to wield a gun of up to around 8 lbs quite easily. Bear in mind clay shooting involves a fair bit of walking and the shooting itself lasts around 1.5-2 minutes whilst in the stand so the act of actual shooting shouldn't be a problem.

Most people can easily live with the recoil of 21g loads through a 12 gauge gun so realistically at this stage the only thing you ought to do is get a competent coach to check her fit for the 12g and advise accordingly in terms of length of pull, then get an Isis Green pad from www.recoilsystems.com

and fitted to see how she gets on.

If and when she decides to move up a gear onto heavier loads such as 24g or even full comp loads of 28g, then it may become necessary to look at things again and there are plenty more options including heavier guns, thicker Green pads, mechanical recoil reducers and comb conversions etc.

SaBS how did you get on with the above, any of the pads turn out to be really good?

I'm in a similar situation the wife is struggling with kick.

Mick

To be honest she hasn't tried any yet.

The good lady has stuck with the 20 bore and shot over 1000 cartridges through it with out much problem, apart from a couple of back to back days shooting over 300 cartridges.

I'll get her a skeet vest with a gel pad when I get a chance and day off to go to the gun shop.

I have the Full ISIS recoil reduction system with the green pad fitted. Fantastic bit of kit, I had it fitted by a gunsmith called Malcolm Jenkins based in Luton.

If you want to know anything at all about recoil, phone recoil systems. The guy who runs it is the font of all knowledge, there's not a lot he does not know about recoil etc.

+1. I have this system fitted to a pair of side by sides and a trap gun. They have been excellent.

Bought a past recoil pad that velcro'd onto a bra strap, for when I took my wife shooting, she found it excellent, and it lived in my gunbag for years, being quietly offered to any new lady shot, all of whom found it really helped tame 28g shells, would have been even better with 24g or 21g. Pachmayer also do one, about 25 quid, and worthwhile.

A little update.

Having visited a few gun shops. The concensus was to have the gun fitted and a kickease system fitted for a price varing from £90-£120.

Now call me a snob if you like, but I didn't fancy having the nice stock cut and one of these systems fitted as the good lady has to still "find her style" of shooting.

Second option was buy a skeet vest and a gel pad to fit on the pocket. Off we set to north wales shooting school/ground in Sealand. The young chap came over and asked if he could help. I can't remember his name but I think he was Italian. He spent about 20 minutes with us explaining about gun mount ive been shootinng over 20 years and i learnt somthing new. He was also of the same thinking as myself about not cutting the stock down, saying the mount is the first thing to master unless the gun is extremely long.

The good lady tried on a couple of skeet vests but the size which would of fitted her best was out of stock. The chap said to try one of the gel pads and to just tuck it under your bra strap and see if that helps, then we can order a skeet vest when required.

This we did and Amy shot last weekend with just the gel pad under her jacket and after 100 clays she was none the wiser she had shot 100 and would have quite happily kicked on for another round.

So in summary, the musto gel pad @£8.99 has done the job very well and the stock on the 687el is still as it should be.

And thanks for the advice of our Italian friend, it's going to cost me a fortune paying for her cartridges now

Thanks for all your suggestions :good:
