vulpesvulpes Posted April 7, 2015 Report Share Posted April 7, 2015 I've been out again today and had a great day with a bag of 65 over some oil seed rape, but I have a very special piece of kit, a magic flask! I'm not kidding one moment there's not a pigeon too be seen but all I have to do is pour a coffee from my flask and the little rascals are everywhere. Has any one else noticed this phenomena? Suffolkngood Posted April 7, 2015 Report Share Posted April 7, 2015 I had one of those magic flasks years ago when I used to fish the winter league on the fens. Sometimes you were only expecting one bite all day and if all else failed, you simple poured a cup of hot coffe and then place it on top of your head................then the dilemma began, did you a) strike and spill coffee all over yourself or b) try to remove the cup from your head and risk missing the bite. Hot coffee running down the back of the neck was great to ease the bitter cold winds until it too went cold and left you shivering till your bones rattled. Is this some Ipswichian fertility ritual Because it seemed you could sit there for hours on end without a bite watching the river freeze in front of your eyes yet strangely, placing said cup on your head would often induce a bite from nowhere. ...........it's a fenland thing!!! vulpesvulpes Posted April 8, 2015 Author Report Share Posted April 8, 2015 You guys stil getting birds coming to the rape?I'm in North Yorkshire so even the non pigeon damaged areas of the rape fields are only 6" high, and now all the spring drilling seems to have stopped, the pigeons are back on the rape.The birds yesterday came in well, they were on the field when I arrived at 8.30am and kept coming in two's and three's until 3pm. Last weekend I had a good day on fresh wheat drillings but at least half of the birds I took had crops with both wheat and rape in. The rest were just stuffed with wheat) so they're obviously still hitting it around here. Once the spring wheat has shown and got a few inches tall I expect they'll be back on the rape quite hard for a while. I tried it abroad when on a driven boar hunt, it worked a couple of times but then, because it was so cold, every time I reached for the zip my 'Willy' hid in my belly button. I also have a magic phone but just when I phone my wife. Out on Sunday and the second she answered I had to put the phone down for a left and right..20 seconds later another one came in but winged it followed by a hasty run across the field to despatch it. Magic flask, magic phone, magic crisps, magic adjusting of decoys without gun...only thing that wasnt magic was my shooting ability that seemed to depart. 2.5 : 1 cartridge to kill ratio for 23 crows and a magpie (not good). I actually decided to move to the another field and stood up, took off my face veil and ear defenders to find 2 crows had come into the pattern and landed.
