Safety at night

Hello everybody I don't know if this topic has been covered before but I thought I would ask the question on the airgun forum as most night shooters who walk about with nv are useing air rifles (I know not all are) ... but after a very close call last year involving some one putting a round over my head from a truck lamping foxs...while I was stalking rabbits on my perm (I was laying prone in the tracks 40 yards from a large group of rabbits 100 yrds in from the field entrance so 140 to my targets from the road) when very quickly a truck pulls in no lights ... lamp comes on before I could make myself known bang over my head and downs a rabbit .

I stayed on the ground and shouted out and flicked on my torch at which point the lamp went out they backed out and drove off down the road (no lights).

I found out 2 days later who it was and had words with him along with the farmer he apologised and swore he did not see me (I must admit I would have been near impossible to spot ) and has permission to shot foxs on all the surrounding fields for a chicken farm down the road . I now use a small flag and poll at the entrance's in a easy to see place for them and others and carry a torch on me at all times .

So my question is have any of you had a similar experience or not ..what do you do for your safety do you use reflective tops, or use flags or any think diffrent when stalking at night with nv ?

If he has permission for foxes, but is shooting rabbits, then he's not very good at target ID, or he's deliberately poaching, or he's a terrible shot.

In any of those cases, he is a danger to other people shooting. I'd have done a lot more than 'have words' with him, I'd have been 'having words' with the police. Your self-restraint is admirable, if a little misplaced, in my opinion.

On one of my permissions I have to text the farmer first as he is very safety conscious and will only allow one shooter at a time on his land, on my other permissions I just assume that I'll see a lamp or ir source and make myself known or move away. I have been picked out one or twice with a lamp from 200-300 yards and I just wave my hands about like a loon and flash my torch back - it is a little disconcerting though.

I have 11 perms and if anyone else is shooting on them I will call the police as it is armed trespass ,,

when I get the perms I make sure the land owner gives me the sole rights to shoot the land,,i do not want any other shooter on the land except myself and whom ever I invite,,

having many shooters on is an accident waiting to happen, as you clearly found out, also I would not trust anyone else shooting on the same land at the same time,

another reason why I always let the land owner know I,m out shooting

Same thing happened to me! I have sole rights on all my perms. But have found discarded .22LR and 17hmr cases on those perms.(not allowed).

I now no longer/rarely shoot alone, I have been lucky enough to find a responsible , trustworthy 'shoot buddy', who needed somewhere to shoot.

Its just safer if there is two of you!

Thank you for your replies I thought I would just get your thoughts on this as it's just gone a year since the incident thankful there has been no more close shaves since.

My perm is only 200 acres my others are smaller and I have sole rights on them .

I do tell the farmer when I'm going if not asked to go and there is one other lad with a shotgun who shoots it every now and the but we know each other and never clash I always go after he has been and works well.

this other guy is related some how to the farmer hence the have a word ... since then he has only been out on my perm 4 times and I, ve been told to stay off when he is going to vist but its always short notice nevertheless all seems good at present with the flag system as you move field to field unfortunately my shooting buddy cant always come (my brother) .

Its was good to see what other people do to safe guard them selfs as you cant always rely on messages getting though !

lesson well learnt for all involved.

This is the reason I love thermal you can spot a person at vast range if it looks like they have a gun and seem close I usually torch them ..if that does not work a flare and if they are still there take your mod off and fire a shot in a safe direction .. I have a number of shooters on boundrys we never shoot in each others direction but what we have had in the past is lads with dogs can be a dangerous situation half a dozen with 10 or more dogs last time I had shotgun so fired that rapid fire 6 shots safe direction at 2 in morning they soon cleared also lost a ewe 2 weeks ago moulded by dogs so have hit the rabbits hard on that part ...no rabbits no dogs in your situation I would have got the police if a person can't shoot safe when using high cal bullet they should not be shooting

Yes Dekers as it was coming up to a year or over now it sort or stuck a cord with the poaching post (safety).... I never really thought about much but was wanting to see if anyone else had a similar or same experience in the past and what they did !

I was new to the perm at the time and the for mention only shot every now and then !

the farmer knew I was out but the other chap did not know I had permission a lot of confusion basically and even the farmer did not know he was out at the time it .. so since then its been sorted with a fail safe as you can't rely on texts alone (who's got a text a day or 2 later ?) ?. It has worked well so far touch wood !! And yes we do now try and communicate so this does nit happen again but as the post I put up is what do you do to stay safe .... is a text anuff ?

not haveing a pop just want to know what you do to make sure your safe!

Right, so it's you to blame for those who can't get a perm then is it?

Slightly off topic and said with tongue firmly in cheek before anyone gets their knickers in a twist...

no problem,,,, the reason I ask for sole permission is for safety reasons, it also costs ME and not the landowner money,, last year on one perm I spent a fortune on cart,s and diesel to keep the pigeons off his land so the least I would expect back is sole shooting permission,,

the other reason is many years ago I was accused of leaving used cartridges on some land,,it certainly was not me and we found out who it was in the end, safe to say he was asked not to shoot the land again,

when getting permission its all about TRUST,,i have had land passed on to me from my father and trust is in my eyes very important,, I want to FEEL SAFE and BE SAFE when I am out shooting and also if I take anyone I need to TRUST them with my life or they don't go with me,,
