aga man Posted April 21, 2015 Report Share Posted April 21, 2015 Hi all, I am looking for any advice on Insa turbo sahara tyres which i am considering getting fitted to my discovery td5. Basically i have found myself needing more grip in the field but my wife drives the disco about on the road so i am beginning to wonder if these tyres will be ok. There seems to be a lot of tyre choice out there in 235/70/16 and someone said get these? Would appreciate any advise from people using these tyres on and of road. Thanks in advance. kennett Posted April 21, 2015 Report Share Posted April 21, 2015 Used them lots, on several different trucks and can't fault them. Had the turbo rangers and they used to go anywhere (and I mean anywhere!!) infact the shogun sport died before the tyres. Fine, if a little noisy on road and not the end of the world at that price if you do stick a nail through them. They have been fine for muddy fields and I don't get stuck in them. They are a little loud on the road, but not bad. They are okay for grip on the road but not great. If you don't drive full out and mash on the gas pedal they are fine. However, they are heavy tires and I'm certain that I'm loosing at least 1 mpg with them (a lot considering I'm getting about 19 mpg around town). For the number of miles I do (3k per year ish) it is fine. I've put more than 10k on them and they barely look worn so I will probably have them another 2-3 years and be fine with that. Davyo Posted April 22, 2015 Report Share Posted April 22, 2015 (edited) I have had 3 diff sets of INSA TURBO's The DAKAR 80% off /20 on road,had them on the Grand Vitara,excellent off road very rarely selection low ratio.Road noise was a loud hum must never had any issues with grip( not a boy racer lol). Swapped then for the Ranger which is a 50/50 road off road tyre,very quiet on road and saved a few MPG but grip was obviously no where near the DAKAR and needed to select low ratio quite often. Recently picked up a JIMNY with INSA SPECIAL TRACKS, which I think is again a 80/20 but the outer tread has big gaps,horrible tyre poss just for the hard core laner.Noisy as hell and vibrated on tarmack on a tight turn or braking when coming to a gentle stop.Changed these within a week back to the RANGER,nice and quiet and smooth,hoping the JIMNY as capable as it is off road won't require anything more than a 50/50. If I where to go back to a more aggressive tyre I would go for the DAKAR or the SAHARA. I will have a word with my tyre fitting centre about any issues with balancing etc a also have a look at the slightly more expensive tyres. Those special tracks look a bit too agricultural and would imagine they are scary on wet tarmac. I will look at the sahara and dakar. grant.molyneux Posted May 7, 2015 Report Share Posted May 7, 2015 Hi , I've got insa turbo special track on my landy and I never get stuck but on the road it sounds like every wheel bearing has gone ,even the radio on loud doesn't drown the sound away. I don't think the saharas are as noisey though because there less aggressive. If your missus is driving it on roads and you want extra grip off road I would recommend bf good ridge mud terrains. They are quite an agressive pattern, so quite noisy on the road and like motty said they was tricky to balance. JamesH Posted May 14, 2015 Report Share Posted May 14, 2015 I've been addicted to off-road driving for the last 10 years and my experience off tyres leads me to sat that the Insa tyres and similar remoulds and real cheapo Chinese tyres will work fine off-road unless you are doing driving on sharp rocks (the sidewalls are thin). Brands like General and Cooper give much better performance all round without being BF Goodrich prices. The better performance becomes obvious in wet road conditions, higher speeds and noise. They also wear down at about half the rate of Insa.
