don't you just love early spring . The rape on my patch is now in flower and it is 4 feet high . The pressure is off me now as the pigeons are only managing to get into the tramlines and they are only taking the bottom leaves . Today I sat in the hedge row with just a turbo flapper set up where the tram lines crossed and were there was enough room for the birds to land . Managed to shoot 23 and picked up 21. One of those super spring days with lots of sunshine and a nice breeze . Not a massive bag but a day that I really enjoyed . Oh , saw some thing today I have never seen before . A pair of English partridges gorging themselves on rape flowers . Where the tractor had knocked the rape down in the tramlines they were absolutely cramming the flowers into them .

Tidying up my garden over the last few days and have had the company of a bunch of pheasants - 7 hens and a couple of sparring cocks - the leftovers from a large shoot which surround our cottage. Fascinating to watch the courting routines. One of the cocks has become quite friendly and follows me about early morning when I feed the chucks - a couple of handfuls go out for him and his girls.

The cocks had a set-too and feathers covered part of my lawn for half a day. Only half a day as this little bonus of nesting material soon disappeared into my nesting boxes and the woods opposite. Isn't nature wonderful!

The wild garlic is well on its way ( if only I could smell it :unhappy: ) the blackthorn blossom has been and gone, some wild cherry has done the same while others are just coming in to flower, and I've had to start cutting my grass. Wonderful time of year with the sun brightening the spirits and warming the soul and have temporarily swapped my gun for my camera and sketchbook, much to the frustration of my dog. :) She now is desperate to retrieve sticks from the river so she can cool down. Great to see her tail still wagging like a rudder as she returns to shore. Simply wonderful.

Just come back from two days stalking in Dumfriesshire, 18*C, bone dry, not a cloud in the sky, woods full of warblers, cuckoos on the hill, curlews calling, snipe drumming, even a roe deer or two to be seen. But most importantly, not a single biting insect!!! No midges, no mosquitoes, no horseflies, no head flies, pure bliss!

What I also like about this time of the year is the looking forward to the cereal crops growing and watching to see if any of it get laid . The rape is well on its way and in full flower . Birds still having a go in the tram lines and in the margins . Still some birds to be shot but not so much pressure on shooting them . More of a relaxed way of shooting the rape . Proberbly only 12 weeks to harvest . Now that's the best time on the shooting calendar .
