However practical, is camo clothing not ridiculous?

I've always been a muted browns and greens type. But as I've come back to shooting more over the past year, I've found that while I was gone in the years before, Camo became de rigeur in the hide and on the foreshore. Friends have persuaded me that pigeons go crazy for camo, and I've been happy enough to give it a whirl.

It seemed obvious to get mine from army surplus - quality outdoor clothing at ridiculously low prices, from people pretty well versed in camouflage.

So far so good.

Except that I look like a soldier. I'm quite fit and just about young enough to still be serving (albeit as quite a senior officer), and I do look like an actual soldier. Or, rather, as must inevitably be the case on a farm in peacetime, like some loser dressing up as a soldier.

This is a problem for me. I feel a tad ridiculous. My family laugh at me. I leave the house to strains of

"Oh, have the Germans landed again?"

"Off to fight the pigeons again, Dad?"

"Saving the country from the crow - you're our hero"

etc

Do others not feel foolish in camo?

I wear to my army surplus olive green cloths all the time while shooting, fishing and working in the house and garden, I wear them because they are cheap, good quality and hard wearing. The only Camo I wear is a real tree jacket and DPM overtrousers. I try not to wear any camo when asking for permission or walking in public places.

I see others wearing camo in the high street and I think it is out of place.

I'm with Mitty on this. I wear green or muted colours but tend to wear what's comfortable when shooting ...if the hide is right it shouldn't really matter and then again have we any proof that wearing orange will scare them off provided we sort out the hide/profile??

When asking for permission I make a point of being well presented..whistle if I can!

No it helps you blend in to you surroundings , the key is to use the right cammo.

Here is a picture of me in my snow cammo.

I only don camo over trousers and camo jacket when I am set up. Saves looking like a squaddie, or airsoft specialist walking out the house or visiting the petrol station on the way to the field.

Generally wear jeans and dpm surplus jacket though.

Realtree pattern jacket for me teamed with olive green ex army trousers. I feel ok when occasionally I end up calling into the supermarket on the way home from a pigeon shoot, where as I always think it strange to encounter someone in the street in full DPM camo clothing.

Fenboy I think your shade of white is not quite right. A bit lighter would do it.

I put my camo jacket on when im entering the field. DPM army is my favourite. My trousers are usually

my snickers work trousers or plain walking trousers. I would only use full camo if I really had to.

In a hide it doesn't make a lot of difference your movement and headware is more important.

I would personally feel a bit of a lemon in public in full camo and yes ive been a soldier.

I do have a couple of cammo jackets that hardly get worn . I much prefer my deer hunter jacket and my deer hunter fleece . In the summer I will normally shoot in a green long sleeved shirt and or a green sweater . If the hide is good then there is no real need for cammo clothing . I certainly wouldn't walk around town in cammo clothing .

I must ecko what Harnser says. In a good hide camo in nice , but not vital. Just dull brown\ green clothes will work well. How ever if you do not have a decent hide and say roost shooting, good camo that is the same as the background colour of the woodland floor is an advandage.

Being a wildfowler I have a range of camo jackets for various back grounds from desert camo for sand dunes to Advantage woodland and wetland camo and even camo to blend with open water at dusk and they do give you a bit of an edge in scant cover , but years ago I shot a lot of duck in an old dark green wax proof coat.
