Labrador feeding advice please

Recommended Posts

I may be being a bit thick but I don't understand the guidelines on the food I'm feeding my 4 month old lab.

I'm feeding him on Skinners Field and Trial. For his weight range ( between 10-15 Kg), at 3- 4 months it suggests between 410g-525g per day. Between 5 -6months it suggests between 375g-450g per day, and less between months 7-9.

What I don't get is that as he is growing over the next few months doesn't he need at least the same as he is having now? I know the guide is a generalisation but the concept of feeding less in the second sixth months of his life confuses me. I thought about contacting Skinners for the rationale but would be interested to hear the views of the PW experts first.

Thanks

My 10 month old springer is currently eating about a third more than my 3 yo cocker the springers food is at the top end of the recommended daily amount as she needs it right now and the cocker I trimmed back a wee bit just to keep him in shape and he seems happy with that right now.

Bit like us humans if you think about it metabolism tends to slow over the years lol.

Not saying to ignore the bag but just follow how ur dog looks as most dogs will be different, generally i always go with how the individual dog looks, i want a pup plumpish but not too heavy, if stools are loose ur mibee feeding too much but likewise if losing body condition need fed more.

Everytime i'm stroking my dogs ur subconcousily feeling/looking at body condition injuries etc

Plus as it gets older prob going from 3 or even 4 feeds down to 2 and even possibly 1 towards end of year
