.....for the week.

A pleasant week ended yesterday with our weekly score topping 100...

We started last Sunday on drilled peas, two hides at opposite sides of the field - we tossed for positions with my pal getting the easier set up at the base of a nice sitty tree and me on the edge of a recently dredged dyke. An afternoon of two havles, firstly he got all the shooting with all the birds crossing to his position (I could only watch as they decoyed right in....) and then later it was my turn as they battled a strong cross wind to my decoys. We ended on 44.

Then, couple of days later, with warmer temperatures we struggled to find any pigeons, not least on another pea field which had been drilled at the same time as the field mentioned above. It was looking like a blank until we checked out some rape I had seen alot of birds on before, but only later in the day.

These fields border a town but always have plenty of action. Unfortunately there are more fields close by which the pigeons have been hammering but I can't shoot them. The farm manager was sympathetic but said 'he already had a pigeon shooter and didn't want to upset him'. Fair enough but his rape is suffering in the meantime.

We set up on the fields we can shoot, about half a mile apart, and both enjoyed plenty of action with birds criss-crossing the fields. Most of mine came into the trees I was set up below and my friend's decoyed in nicely. We finished on 26.

Then, a few days later, after spending too long staring at a computer screen I needed some fresh air. I decided to check out the pea fields that hadn't shown any birds previously. Glad I did as there were a good number flighting across to drop in, against a strong SW wind. I set up at the only bush that was under the flightline (as the pix shows) and though the first few appeared wary, once I got a couple and set up the flapper, their confidence increased and I enjoyed decent sport all afternoon, till 6pm when they switched to another part of the field close to the main road. I was more than happy with the 31 I picked.

So a nice few days, finally seeing some birds on the peas which bodes well for weeks to come and some good news to pass on to the farm manager.
